When I try to start my vette, it goes clunk at every attempt. After a few trys, it fires right up, and runs great! When I shut it off, it will fire right back up 60% of the time. Let it sit, and we are back to clunk!! . What is going on?

Sounds to me like your starter's selonoid is going. My vette went through like 3 GM remanufactured starters in the fast 4 years. The problem is that the selonoid overheats by being so close to the exhaust manifolds. Over time, starting WILL get harder. After awhile, you will have to start banging on the starter with a hammer. Eventually, that won't even work. This happened to me for the last time about 6 months ago. After I had the clanging sound for a while, then the starter would start to click like it was the battery, which was a brand new Die Hard, and the fly wheel was changed a few years back. I bought a Summit Racing high torque mini starter for about $150 new. I also bought a heat shield to wrap around the starter to protect it from heat. The starter shield wrapping is an invaluable thing to have, and especially everyone with a vette with headers should have one wrapped around their starter. The new Summit starter I bought only draws 90 amps, and is powerful enough to turn over an engine up to 18:1 compression, so it has no problem what so ever with turning over my L98. Invest in a good mini starter, and absolutly get the heat shield wrapping. The wrapping is only like $25 from Summit. I hope this helps you a little. Good luck.
