Default Oil Filter Adapter

I know that we ahve the cooler and the oil filter attaches to the banjo bolt like thing. This banjo like bolt thing screws into the oil filter adapter which is what the oil filter would screw into if it wasn't for the oil cooler. Question is, this oil filter adapter is held onto the block by 2 bolts. There are 2 ways of installing this adapter. Which is the right way?

The oil filter screws onto this bolt like thing which goes thru the oil cooler and screws into this adapter thing which is bolted onto the block. The adapter thing is held on by 2 bolts so, is there a right way or a wrong way of puting this adapter thing on?

I honestly don't know... I thought the lines might get in the way of the pan if it was on wrong.

I will check my helms manual in the morning (87)... it's out in the garage... and its dark, and I am tuckered out.

gee... I am not sure...

Do you have a helms manual? It might show... my filter adaptor does not look the least bit like that... then again, I have an LT1...

It has been a long time since I put one of these things on but by looking at an extra I ended up with my guess is there is only one way it will go on. The round protrusion is a spring loaded check valve. My guess is there is a corresponding nitch in the block that this protrusion fits into. Does this answer your question?

The way my engine was, I could either fit it on with the extra round part on the base facing forward which covers up a square hole in the block or backwards where it doesn't.

My Chilton book doesn't show how it is to be done. Maybe an engine shop will know.

If I understand the question right you are talking about the aluminum adapter that bolts to the block. The adapter bolts either way with no problems.

Thanx. That is what I wanted to know. There were 2 ways and I felt if there was a wrong way, I would have found it. I put the extra round part over the square hole that was on the block and bolted it down. Didn't know if I did it right but seems like my oil pressure is a little lower when I romp on it. Maybe I forgot to put the gasket or O-ring that I should have. Will hve to check it.
