I just got my 11" sawblade ZR1 wheels and want to put some tires on them for auto-Xing. I've made the trip to the Tire Rack online and found two brands that seem to fit my budget and performance requirements. These will not be daily drivers, just put on for the drive to, racing and drive back. Here are the choices so far:
size 315/35/17
Sumitomo HTRZ at $156 each
Kumho VictoRacer V700 at $181 each
Kumho ECSTA V700 At $184 each
Anybody have these and can offer recommendations? Any other brands out there in the same price range? A lot of tire companies don't offer this size. Goodyear is too expensive along with some of the other companies. Thanks for any feedback.
For autocrossing I'd highly reccomend the new Kuhmo V710's. These are even stickier than the Hoosiers and they're a heck of a lot of tire for the money. The Sumitomo tires and the Kuhmo ecsta are both a good all around tire but won't be what you're looking for on the autocross course. A few weeks ago I watched a ZR1 (Bullis from Chicago area) absolutely tear up the competition autocrossing on new 710's. He was running 295's up front and 335's in the back and yes the 335's will fit on the 11" rim without problems. I've heard people argue against running tires wider than the rim due to slow turn in problems but after watching a (high caliber) driver blow the socks off of competition running this set up I'm sold! I've still got victoracer 700's but I'm going to pick up a set of 710's this winter as soon as I can afford it! I have talked to several people including a couple friends autocrossing with these new 710's and have yet to hear anything negative about these tires. disclaimer: I'm sure that no set of tires will make anyone into an overnight national champion but we all need any edge we can get right?
I have run the Kumho VictorRacers, Ecsta V700' & now the V710's. The V700's & V710's are superior in AX. to Victoracers (much newer design).
If you run the V700's they should be shaved, otherwise the tread gets chewed up. They stick really good. I keep them on the car for moving the car around on the streets, they don't look so much like race tires.
The V710's are awesome, best bang for the buck. But they're basically slicks with 2 cheater stripe's on the inside, but they look race tires, they can really get the cops attention on the streets. They work differently than the V700's, little more give in corners but incredible grip and predictability, unbelievable in slaloms. I currently run 315's front & 335's rear. I put RX7 bump stops on the rear of my 86, other they rub, cheap solution works perfectly! I have 12" wheels from AFSwheels.com. with correct offset for 86C4.
The last set was about $210.00 I think, from the Tire Rack. But I got my last set for free! cause I bought the first sets that were recalled.
The Hoosiers are similar but cost a lot more and consensus is they don't last as long as Kumho's. We run here in SoCal with a lot of National Champs. All are on Kumho V710's ? any questions.
I have Kumho's on my Vette, not enough miles to say yea or nay. Good so far is about it. I've had good luck with Sumitomo tires in the past, but not any road time on the Vette.
A good example of V710's: Just be glad you don't have to race Tom regularily!
On the other hand you can learn a lot just watching him on the edge every lap.
Also, I'll be racing California Speedway this weekend (& Tom Berry will be there) but if you like, I'll check around the vette stable and see how the 335 V710's work on your 11" wheels. The offset is really important, because they rub "alot". http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/roadracing/12912/
