Every car I have ever driven you can forget about shifting into reverse if there is ANY forward motion at all. Most cars will easily let you go the other way though. The ZF on the other hand works perfectly. I can be in a parking lot, moving somewhat slowly and put it into reverse while still moving forward slightly and it never makes a noise.
Most tranny's will grind like crazy. Is reverse synchronized too on these things?
A few years ago I bought a 91 Stealth RT/Twin Turbo (before you flame, it's gone and I have a 94 Vette now!). Long story short, the tranny and transfer case went south. Both were ZF components.
When I looked in the service manual, I found detailed instructions on tearing apart, fixing, and rebuilding the auto transmission and the 5-spd (non-ZF) for the base cars. However, when you turned to the section on the ZF 5 spd transmission, all it said was "non-serviceable component. Replace".
Well I must have a bad one then. I have a 96 CE LT4 and If I try to go direct to reverse it will grind really bad sometimes. Before going into reverse I have to shift through 4th and 5th several times and then very gently put it into reverse. Even that doesn't always work and I will get a slight grind. I have a friend with a CE and a Grand Sport and he has to go through pretty much the same routine to get into reverse.

sure that they were ZF? I read long time ago those were Getrag... and this site confirms it... Stealth Transmission Specs
