It's true, and it's disgusting. It's called an automatic transmission and a high stall torque converter, probably sticky tires too.
Definately STICKY Tires!
Those times are still really amazing for his setup! However I did get in the 12's stock one night when the car sat until close to closing and was like at 120* at the line and this was on GCS's. With slicks, gears and skinnies and launch at 4500 and powershift I bet you could get a stick in the low 12.'s stock If ya hooked!

Don't forget the -3000 ft air those guys at E-town run in. Who needs a supercharger
YES You are correct I ran the 12.2 under "IDEAL" conditions..for example.. the weather WAS -1600 (thats the best I've ever seen) I had skinny front tires, no spare tire in the car, I was running on 1/4 tank of gas...I was using BFG Drag Radials, & they had about 15 runs on them & were in great shape..air temp was about 45 deg. 30% humidity.. & the barometer was killer 30.9 or some ridicules # but I loved it
I did back it up with several 12.3x runs & with that set up ran consistent 12.4x on many days in "Normal" weather I have run 110 mph many times even at the Div 1 finals in DE. back in Sept.
I find with an LT1 it runs best at app 150 deg.. also the oil temp should be over 140 & the transmission temp 120 or higher..
