Default heater hose installation

I have an '87 coup. In the past someone did some work either on the replacing the heater core or maybe just hoses. There are two short pieces of hose that come off the heater core tubes to a pair of steel tubes that are SUPPOSED to be bolted to the side of the engine compartment. It is not bolted there because someone didn't (I assume couldn't) slide the hoses far enough up on those metel tubes. I'd like to fix it but don't want to wreck the heater core trying either. Thought I'd just cut off and discard the short pieces of hose off the heater core to avoid damage. Is there a trick to putting that all together without stressing the heater core tubes? My only ideas are to heat the new hose and apply some kind of lube before trying to push it all together. Is there a better way? If there's too much risk of damaging the core I'll just leave it alone or fabricate some kind of bracket to reach from those metal tubes to where it's supposed to mount. It's probably less than an inch away.

It's been a while since I replaced these on my 88 and I"ll check it out in the garage tomorrow, but it seems like the heater hoses are "preformed/prebent"

Liguid soap is a great lubricant

At least I got you back to the top

just at thought. Someone may have disconnected those on purpose because the heater core was shot. Once you hook those up, be very careful and prepared to run some antifreeze down into your floorboard. Smell is hard to get out!

Very good observation!

Is the heater working now? hot air coming out?

If not then someone may have done just what has been noted here!

Check to be sure that the heater is putting out hot air and that the hose set up you are looking at isn't a heater core bypass!

Good response!

It's all assembled and working. It's just the pair of steel tubes aren't slid on the short little hoses far enough towards the firewall. I assume whoever had it appart got it together that far and either couldn't slide it any further or just chickened out. I'd like to get it together correctly. I know from past experience heater cores don't take a lot of abuse. thanks.
