I have been looking for a replacement to the Opti system on my 46,000 mile '93 for a couple of years. I have had problems on and off, and not looking forward to replacing the Opti. Two of my friends have replaced the replacement within a year or two, so my faith in system was shaken. I am not an engineer but I cannot think of a worse place to put a distributor!
I decided to install a Delteq system. Got a good price from Elitesparkplugs.com and the installation was fairly straight forward (except for the spark plug wires, of course). Anyway, the car runs as good, or perhaps better, than when new. This system looks a lot like the ZR1 ignition system in the shop manual (i.e. 4 coils).
Thats good news its working out for you. I just changed out my opti for a small fortune. Im really afraid to get caught in the rain now. What a terrible ffffin design. If problems ever occur please let us know. If my opti goes again im doing what you did. How much did it cost ? part and labor?
I paid 595.95 (plus shipping) for the system and did the installation myself. The directions or an ad said about 3 hours to install. I probably spent about 4-5 hours excluding the spark plug wires but had a couple of stuck bolts. The spark plug wires took another 5 hours, or so. The spark plug wires are the tough part.
