Default My Exhausting Decision

My '88 L98 is in need of an exhaust system. At 109,000 mi I'm sure the cats are shot too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the dual exhaust system from Corvette Central. There is no emisions inspection where I live so I'm not going to replace the cats:

They come with a cross-connection at the rear.

They also have O2 sensor ports.

$395 w/magnaflow dual tip mufflers.

$230 w/o mufflers.

Does any body have any experience with this system? Does it sound like a good deal with the mufflers included? Should I just get the exhaust pipes and use a different type of mufflers? Opinions anyone?

Thanks for the help.

If it includes a front Y w/o pre-cats, even if not a mandrel-bent setup, it should give a nice performance gain.

I don't think I've heard one so cannot comment on sound.

I saw that in their catalog. Price seems reasonable. The EPA keeps making threats about doing smog testing here in Western Michigan but so far our politicians have convinced them that any dirty air we have here is being blown over to us from Chicago and Gary. I decided to go with a Random Technology cat just in case.

If this is the same as I've seen in catalogs, there is no "Y" pipe. It is true duals. The left and right sides don't connect anywhere. I think it is 2.25" and has no "H" or "X" connections.

My exhaust is 2.5" with an "X", duals, with no cat(s). I bought mine as a low mileage used set up. The guy had a local muffler shop fab it up for him, on the car. You might inquire, locally to see of someone can't whip you up something for you. Other than the possibility of finding something better for less, I don't know of anything wrong with that dual system.

RACE ON!!!

That's a 2.25" pipe... It's also avaiable from pretty much every other dealer (for about the same price). I believe that would be a pretty good gain over a stock l98 system, though I am not familiar with how the 88 system is set up.

CFIEFI, I wondered where you got your system from. I've been looking for a 2.5" system... I think I am going to try and get an LT1 2.75" system to fit though...

If you have no inspections in your area, just go get a 2 1/2 dual system custom made for your car. It make a big difference

I have the system from Mid America. Well made and easy to install. Not a huge gain in the 1/4, maybe a tenth, but further mods will benefit from better exhaust. Not nearly as good as headers but a decent start. Would be easy to cut and adapt to headers......sounds like my next mod.

It was bent up on a muffler shop in Florida. I bought it off of here, or eBay. I can't remember which. The seller thought it was too loud, with stock mufflers. I think he was nuts, but that's what makes a horse race. It is barely louder than my full stock system, with the gutted cat. It bolts right up to stock manifolds. The "X" is simply two 45* bends with the outside of the curve cut off of each and welded together. Simple, cheap, and effective. I think he said the whole thing cost $400.00-$450.00, installed.

RACE ON!!!

mikey whipreck, if you are not too far from Trenton, NJ you might contact Mufflex (link on my site). Denny runs a custom exhaust shop and his guys do excellent work.

They custom built my 2 1/2" mandrel bent SS front Y, installed the RT cat, and cut & welded my TPIS cat back so it would mount up properly. This all took them about 3hrs and cost $300.
