Default Lingenfelter Superram Mods

I have recently put a Superram on my 89 L98 and have had difficulty putting the stock valve covers back on. The clearance between the Crane roller rockers (aftermarket) and the runners dont allow the covers to seat. Does any one know of an after market valve cover that can be used. Or is grinding out the inside of the stock cover the way to go. Thanks

I have factory covers with mine and they are "ground out" - no issues

I found they need to be ground out.
You need to remove the rail that the gasket sits in on the inside of the cover. Just the top rail.
I ground out the section in front of the rockers only so there is still something for the gasket to hold on to.

I also installed aftermarket covers later, and had to ground the edges of those to clear the runner on the super ram.

I've actually tried three different sets of valve covers with my SR. GM Performance, a no-name aftermarket, and Edelbrock Signature cheapies from AutoZone. The Edelbrocks fit with no work needed, because they're really thin, but look like crap. I wound up with the set of GM Performance that another SR owner had ground pieces out of (outer lip in some areas, inner lip in others) and I still had to do more grinding of my own.

One thing I did find was that moving all the wires to underneath the plenum helped because I wasn't constantly pushing them out of the way or getting them caught under the covers. Also makes the install look cleaner.

How's your SR been with vacuum leaks?

These may work without mods, but may work.

On that page, P/N 12497978 are what I'm using. They needed a lot of grinding.

this sucks. i bought GMPP p/n 12497985 because these are supposed to be the solution to the valve cover oil leak problem with AFR heads. now i've got to grind beautiful brand new chrome alum covers because they wont fit right with the SR? must be due to the additional 1/4" in height of the GMPP covers.

what ruination can expect toi have to be done to the covers from the grinding?

Thanks for saving me some $$$ as those were the ones was thinking about getting. So, even though they are listed as a quarter inch taller than standard, they need work. Bummer. Is the work needed on the sides, where?

My problems were due to the much-larger-than-stock SR runners and the taller roller rocker arms. I could not get the edge of the cover past the bottoms of the runners where they curve back and in to the manifold. When I bought them from a Forum member, he'd already ground away some of the inner lip inside to clear his arms, plus took off some of the outer edge where the runners are. I had to do more; not sure why.

FWIW, 75% of the work done was on the inside and the other 25% doesn't show unless you look hard below the runners.

I still have oil leaks, though; I'm using Pro Topline heads and the covers don't seem to fit the ends of the heads quite right. Had to do some grinding on the inner lip on one end of each side, and looks like I've got more to do.

My set of very thin cheap Edelbrock covers fit fine, if you want a quick solution. Biggest reason why I didn't keep using them is because those are perimeter-bolt, and I was moving to center-bolt. My heads do support both (or did...), and I test-fit them and they worked fine.

The covers were about $30 from Auto Zone.

Interesting thread, I have the medium height from Superchevyperformance.com that they powder coated for me and I have had no clearance problems with the SR. I did have to grind a little off of the plastic wiper cover to fit properly.

Rich, thanks for the explanation, that makes more sense now. I do understand that the wider-railed AFR heads require a little grinding of the inner lip at the rear corners of the GMPP ProForms to seat correctly. I have the CC Pro Mag RR's, these are supposed to have no fitment issues inside. Perhaps your RR's are a bit taller which would case the problem you're referring to.

85vet, I looked up your valve covers, the superchevyperformance site says that your are "tall" covers, being taller in the middle that is. But if yours are no problem perhaps mine won't be either, we'll see!

Bradvet,
They actually have a short, medium and a tall. Mine is the medium!!!

If iy was tall, It would not fit at the wiper motor. I can look up my purchase to see the #'s if interested.

I am using the 12497978's with a superram and 1.6 roller rockers and I didn't have to change anything. They fit perfect.
