Default usb to serial adaptor?

Anyone on the forum have a belkin usb to serial adaptor? I am haveing problems getting mine to work. I have been trying to log a run with Datamaster but when I go in to log a run it is not showing me the com port that the adaptor is on. I even tried changing the com port to one that Datamaster will allow me to choose but it tells me that there is no ECM. Does anyone have any idea? It would be appreciated.

I tried the Belkin USB to serial adapter, and never could get Datamaster to connect. I ended up getting another laptop that had a serial port.

Good Luck.

A lot of guys have been using the PCMCIA serial port adapters with good luck. I haven't tried it myself but thats what they say. Its more expensive than the Belkin adapter but if it works......

I am useing the same. I have a dell and a AKM cable and I can't get Datamaster to recognize the com port. Where you select what com port you want to use to connect under the options menu the com port I need to select is grayed. It won't let me select com4. How is your's set up? Thanks, Ray

Tom, you have helped with this software haven't you? What do you think? Why won't Datamaster allow me to choose com4 to connect? Thanks, Ray

Ok, I,m a computor rookie myself but I will try. You have to select the comport in the computor to match Datamaster. My Datamaster is set up to run on Comport 3 or 4. Yours should be similar. On the computor start menu rt. click Computor. Click properties. Click Hardware. Click Device manager. Click Ports. Double Click Belkin USB serial port. Click port settings and click advanced . Set your comport here. Hope this helps, If not, PM me and I will give you my phone #.

i have the belkin. i downloaded the beta version, and it worked perfectly after that. it's been a while, but i think there's even a menu item you check to have datamaster specifically know you're using the belkin.

it's version 3.4.17.

I have a Radio Shack USB/serial adapter, and it works great with WinALDL, but I cant connect to Tunerpro RT's ALDL function or Datamaster- using the same two transistor cable.

MSR is correct, there is a USB to Serial adapter box to check in datamaster, also a box just for vettes that disables the handshake between the ECM and the digidash. I tried all of those and couldnt get mine to work.

Im trying to get some time to try it on a friends laptop (he has a serial port) and see if it all works there. Ive burned up 5 *free* runs on datamaster with no logging actually taking place. I would love to have it work on tunerpro, because thats what I use to edit, but datamaster looks to have some nice features too. It would be nice to have something faster than WinALDL's 160baud, but at least I have something.

Ray, I do use the datamaster software. But I have a laptop with a serial port so I don't have much experience with having to use an usb to serial adpapter unit.

Here is a link I found while doing some research today. Some of you electronics guys (tweets) may find this interesting and can shed some light on the USB/Serial issue.

I'll try to help but I cant remember my pass word most of the time on this form.
Well here goes !
Control panel /device mgr./properties/!!!DO NOT TRY TO RESET YOUR COM PORT!!!! YOU WILL KILL!CRASH!WIPE OUT YOUR COMPUTER!!!
Now that you are looking at your systems, shut off all!!!!! INFER RED devices by going into properties ,all things including if a lap top kill the external mouse.
Now here is a big one shut off if you have it installed the MODEM!!! and the printer ,shut down your computer and then it should work as long as the computer conector is connected to the car and key is turned to on,your computer when it comes on line should work then,I think?

Thanks for all the help guy's. I used up all my free log runs on Datamaster so I ended up returning the laptop to Dell. If I had a few more runs on Datamaster I may have figured it out. But because of that and the fact that after 30 days I couldn't return the computer I was forced to forfit. I had $800.00 tied up and if I couldn't get it to work I would have been pissed. Thanks again, Ray

0.02 worth.

My idea of a kick butt "package" is;
ECM communications hardware (USB / Serial) and diagnostic software.
Data collection software.
ECM file modification software.
PROM eraser and rewriter hardware and software.
And a set of general DIY instructions on how to pull your current ECM program off the chip, save it, modify it and burn it back to the ECM.

Some of the packages offered have most of the parts included, "but you may also need one of these and one of those". Huh? Don't ask me what I MIGHT need. It took a weekend to figure out which ECM I had and what all the shortened number jargon was all about. Lots of guys out here are looking for a complete turn key product and wouldn't mind spending the money for something understandable and that works.

Right now you offer a good line of parts and Prominator has a convienient product that all but eliminates the upload hassels.

Now if there was an off the shelf package for an 86 L98 Corvette......
