I pulled the battery on my 91, for Winter storage and finally took the time to look for the fan fuseable link that was blown. I found it and am now wondering if replacing it is a trick or not? It appears to go from a junction block to a black "joiner" that the heavy wire comes out of. Does this black plastic "joiner" come apart for link replacement? I haven't taken a real close look as of yet. Thanks, Frank
The whole thing is fusible link. The black part is kind of just an identifier for all that I know. Cut it out and replace it with a equal gauge/length piece of fusible link. You can by spools of it at NAPA.
Yeah, I'm guessing the black "joiner" is just an item to realistically join two different gauge wires like a 20 and a 12 but I wasn't sure if it was reusable. I suppose I'll just solder the two together and tape'um. Thanks Scorp. I've been a long time away. This place sure has changed.........for the better!
Suggest you cut the fuse off just on the bigger wire side of the plastic chunk. You want to replace the whole link, not just the small part the melted. (The rest of the link has been perm damaged.) For the none believers,.. yes you prolly could get away w/ just adding a splice to the end of the link,... but how it will effect the ckt over time,... is anybodies guess.
Best to solder and heat shrink. Can crimp and heat shrink. Tape is still better than nothing at all.
There is nothing special about fuseable wire that makes it fuesable. You can buy stuff called "fusable link" wire, or just use a piece of wire that is 2AWG's sizes smaller than the wire/ckt it is protecting. i.e. 12AWG ckt,... uses a 14AWG "fuseable link". The idea is to put a "weak" link, somewhere you can get to it, easily.
Good idea on that heat shrink. I never gave it a thought (old school). I was planning on replacing the whole wire. Heck it's only 6" long and only needs a new pigtail. Thanks, frank
