Hi. I have an 86 coupe, with 88-89 wheels. The car drives fine, but when I get to around 65 mph, there is a vibration in the front right. I have had the tires/wheels checked and they are strait. Any ideas? It is driving me crazy, and it continues to vibrate and get worst the faster I go above 65 mph.
You might want to post this in the C4 Tech section as this area is for problems related to forum issues.
To answer your question, you may have a trire that is out or round or a wheel that bent. An out of balance condition will usually start aroud 50MPH but for the most part, it shouldn't get worse as speed gows up.
Another possibility is a tire that may have some cord separation. Try swapping tires front to rear to see if the problem moves with the tires. You can also swap right to left to check for a specific tire (even though the wheels are directional and possibly the tires too) and then swap them back.
Try what C4 Cruiser said. If that doesn't solve the problem, assuming your wheels and tires are balanced, check your shocks. Replacing shocks cured a good portion of the vibration my car had when I bought it.
Also, when was the last time the car had a four wheel alignment? Any slop in the wheel bearings? How are the control arm and sway bar bushings?
Not too many things will cause a front end vibration. Should be easy to pinpoint. Eliminate the cheap/easy stuff first.
Would the same analysis hold true for a "whole car shudder" - similary my '88 vert runs nice and smooth (well more or less) to about 60-65 - then there is a pronounced shudder/vibration, but I can'y isolate it to the front end (steering wheel does not fight me, feels more like the old "harley rumble"). At about 72 it smooths out some, but not completely.
