I have a problem with the torque convertor on my 88 vette not engaging properly between 29 to 35 mph when at normal opperating temp (when cold it engages fine). It just locks then unlocks constantly between these speeds.
Above 35 its fine and also keeping my foot on the brake then releasing it above 35 the tc locks instantly with no fuss. The gearbox is a gm recon unit and the tc is new. I've had the box checked and all is fine, gear changes are crisp and the tv cable is properly adjusted (Oil is also to the correct level and type). I'm sure this is some sort of electrical prob, but dont know where to look.
I'm desperately looking for some advice as this problem has already cost me a fortune as parts arn't cheap over here in the uk and is ruining an otherwise fine car.
Thanks in advance.
I agree, it's probably electrical. The TCC is activated by the ECM energizing the solenoid in the trans calling for lock up. The TV cable plays no part. The brake pedal switch IS supposed to disengage the clutch. If the solenoid in the trans is installed correctly, and working properly, it could be caused by a seemingly unrelated sensor input to the ECM, like TPS? MAF? ECT? VSS? If the ECM is getting incorrect engine operating conditions from a sensor, it may have trouble making the appropriate decision on the TCC engagement.
Thanks for your reply. The car is going back to the garage on mon so just need a little more info. This is definately a problem only when the engine is at normal opperating temp (approx 5 mins after startup so oil in the box would still be cool), before this time the TCC locks at exactly 29mph with no fuss.
The MAF has already been replaced, presumably the TPS and VSS are unnaffected by temp, leaving the ECT. I have watched the engine temp like a hawk and the ECT appears to read true as there are no temperature fluctutions.
I did however notice that the oil temp switch seemed to be leaking a little, does this unit have any input to the ECM or does it run straight the the gauge in the dash?
Also the ECM is showing no trouble codes either. If you could shed any more light on this it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
