I have a 86 that I am getting a code 36 on. It seems to run just fine most of the time, but sometimes when it is cold it hesitates pretty bad till it warms up.
I have checked the burnoff relay and it seems fine along with the MAF sensor. Anyone have any more diagnostic procedures? I am thinking a bad ECM.
Do you have the Helms manuals? looking at the diagnostic chart it says to be sure all connections to ECM, relays and MAF sensor are correct and clean before replacing the ECM.
Maf codes can be very frustrating.
Ther are two relays power and burnoff I would replace them first. But:
when I had MAF problems with my 85 and it turned out to be a bad ECM so they do go bad. The only way to test it is to replace it. Short money about $100. Sometimes its best just to throw some parts at it than spend too long diaging. Would cost alot more than that to take it to the dealer.

How are you sure the relay is working correctly? Have you grounded circuit 900 and witnessed the contacts closing? Have 12V to the relay? The relay is the most likely culprit. Cheap and easy to replace.

Replace your burnoff & power relay. Your MAF may already be gone. Anyone who replaces a MAF on a TPI car should always replace the power & burnoff relay at the same time!
My Father is a electrical engineer and tested the relays, they have the proper resistance and are working properly. I also have a Genisys scanner and can see the MAF is working properly. Im going to replace the ECM next I think.

The MAF can be working properly but if it's not burning off when you shut it down it will give a 36 the next time you start it.
If you know it's burning off everytime, it may well be the ECM.
Nice diagram Agent86.
If you want to see if the MAF is burning off you can disconnect the MAF from the air cleaner and look in it while you have someone else shut off the car. After a few seconds the wire will glow red for about 1 sec. If not make sure you have 12v to relay, the ECM grounds the burnoff relay to burn off the MAF.
You can then check for power, grd, and 5v from the ECM to the MAF at the MAF, especially the grounds.
If all of this checks good what else is left?
