In need of purchasing a diagnostic scan tool. Can anyone recommend a good brand? I have a 94 vette (OBDII).
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure 94 was still obdI. Anyway I use EASE, you need a laptop to run it and it runs 330$, but you can scan all GM obdI. www.obd2.com

I thought that 94's had the obdI as well, but the more I researched it, the more it sounded like it has the OBDII. GM started using OBDII in 1994 and was putting it in the vettes. Federal regulations required every auto to have it begining in 1996. Correct me if I am wrong, but does the OBDI have the 12 prong DLC? I have a 16 prong DLC. THe GM dealership in town wants $450 for a scan tool. Its way out of my price range. The "service engine soon" comes on every time I reach 65 mph and I want to know whats wrong. It has a new corsa exhaust and the O2 sensors seem to be okay. The car only has 65K on it. I will look into EASE though. Thanks
I have EASE and love it. If your car has OBD1, your cheapest scan tool is a paper clip and this forum.
I would pull that battery or ecm fuse for a few minutes to reset all the codes, then drive the car for a while and see if you get new ones. Then use a paperclip to jump the ADL connector and pull the codes using the "check engine" light flashes.

The AutoTap for OBD11 runs $289.95 at Zip Products and the OBD1 Auto Xray EZ scan runs $299.00 also from Zip Products. Why not use a paper clip. Its cheap and it works as well as the above units.

I've used the AutoXray unit and you can get live data while driving. You can't get the same data with the paper clip.
THe 94 is OBDII'ish. It is known sometimes as
OBDI 1/2. I use TTS datamasters and love it. You can down load a free trail that wil give you 20 free scans. You will need a laptop and a datacable (AKM Datacables sells them) For just a simple scan and looking at code Free Scan works but will lock up after a while on the 1994 corvettes for some reason. I use it every now and then if I just want a quick shot of whats going on or to pull codes (And it is FREE). I have also built the cables in the past off of internet diagrams and they also seem to work fine.

I pulled the battery and the ECM fuse. The light came on again after I reached 65mph. I tried pulling codes with the paper clip, but from what i read in the repair manual, you can't do that on the 16 prong...only the 12??? The only thing that happened when I tried to flash codes via paperclip was that the light went out completely and the fans came on???
Yes you can pull codes on the 94, I will post later if someone else does not jump in, I think its pins 4 and 12 but DO NOT TRUST me on that I will look it up later to make sure unless some else post the correct pins

Other nice thing is once you get going with a pc/cable setup, you can eventually move on to TunerCat or LT1edit and program your computer... (control fans, afr, spark, trans shifts, all sorts of cool stuff)
