Next time somebody in a GTO wants to talk trash just take them out to an autocross course or a road race course and see how well all that HP works for them. When that barge goes body rolling off the road you'll see where the Corvette really shines. HP isn't the ONLY thing that makes a true sports car.
perfectly stated. PLUS the GTO is flat out ugly as sin. Looks just like a rice car. So who gives a hoot about some "high" hp piece of garbage.

besides... everytime new technology hits the market and things begin to age, there will always be things that are bigger, better, and faster. It is just a fact of life. Look at it from this twisted point of view... a 99 DSM Mitusbishi Eclipse will run circles around most early 80's - 70's - and 60's American Iron... that is not to say that the old American Muscle is not as respectable. A vette is still a vette no matter how you look at it. It is not only a car, but a lifestyle.
The GTO is nice... but a C6 will still stomp a mudhole out of it. Back the clock up to what ever year your car may be (96 for me) and compare it to other cars of the same caliber. My ride impressed a friend who has an 2002 LS-1 Camaro!!! Don't count your car out just because it is limited from what GM has put in it. It is still cool by any respect.
this is how i look at it. look at what you bought the car for and now what it's actually worth. take what it's worth now and throw that 10k into it. with 10k you should be able to get a long block and a blower installed. you'd push 550 rwhp EASY. now take the price of a new GTO or even a C5 or worse a C6 pricing. ever price LS1 parts? 10k will only get you a H/C/I with a Tune setup which includes labor. prices are alot cheaper for the "Old Technology" than the newer stuff. by spring i'll have about 2500 in mods only in my 87 vette and it will have 10 second possibilities. H/C/I and 150 shot of juice = between 550-600 rwhp and about 700+lbs of rwtq.for another 3k the long block stroker with aftermarket big valve heads in the summer time. this gets me a nice internally forged short block and a direct port 250 shot and now i'm upto about 450-500 rwhp 400-450 rwtq NA and 700-750 800-900 rwtq on juice. i'm now only upto 5.5k total with out labor. (i do my own labor on my cars) even with labor your only looking at 7.5k at most.
even a brand new 06 Z06 can't hang with that
then if you need more do a SC setup and run a 75 shot of juice which equals about 150 more rwhp with just the hit o juice due to the SC condensing the intake charge. stroker + SC = 600+ rwhp + 150 rwhp nitrous 75 hp shot = 750 rwhp+ depending on how fast you spin the blower
there is really no difference in technology anyway. yeah there are some small changes like spark plug wires same length, coil packs and a few other minor things but the main is how the air is run thru the motor with the small runner size on the intake and head design. they all do the same thing is the bottom line. move air thru the motor.
chin up man throw some mods at it and have fun and enjoy it. no matter how fast you go there are others that are just as fast. there are 7 second street cars around the baltimore washington area. very rare to run into them but there are scores of 9 10 and 11 second cars around here.
if you wanna run in the pack 550 rwhp isn't cutting the mustard anymore
I look at it this way.....My car in 1994 would beat most cars on the dragstrip made that year...and prolly even a few years after that....Yeha ok so a 2005 Mustang GT would beat my 1994(if my 1994 was stock, as of now i am sure i would light an 05 Stang up hardcore style), but who cares, it took 11 years of technology to beat my car stock for stock....Anyways thats the way i look at it.....It took all these new cars years to get to where my car was 1994......I'm willing to bet its the same for any year Corvette.....

True Dat!!! There is one other thing to consider. In 1983 Chevy had various press releases regarding the new C4 vette. Several, if not all, performance magazines did write ups on this new and glorious machine. At the time the Crossfire injections and giant brakes made it one of the most fascinating cars on the road. It had a top speed of over 140mph and stuck to the road like glue!!! It was in the top 5 fasted cars on the planet and bested the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, and EVERYTHING that America had to offer. A 'simple' Chevy was elevated to a supercar classification and has since remained there.
The 84 vette may not be considered the most fierce thing come track day by today's standards... but what is the future going to hold for us in 20 years... and at what status will the GTO and Mustangs be at that time? I bet performance will be 'lacking' for those cars in 20 years too just as it is for 20-30-40 year old autos today. Don't sweat it... you own a supercar that all other American sports cars strive to be. All American performance is guaged off of what a Corvette will do.
I've got a $2500 engine in my car, 10.98 is not too bad. I would like to go faster and can, but don't want the roll cage. My friend took a completly stock motor, ex. 94 formula and went 11.52 with a 150 shot.
As for the GTO, i think it's UGLY..worst performance car GM has produced. I will say, even though i'm not a ford fan, the new mustang is nice.
I raced 1 last week and lost by a half a car! I am an 88 running 13.7 at 102.6. They will never have what we do.
A half a car??? I'm not at all impressed with any new "sports car" that beats any 16 or 17 year old Vette by a "half a car". If that GTO owner bought that car for performance, he could have kept $20,000++ in his pocket and only given up a half car length by buying an '88 Vette. Add a few dollars in mods and the Goat would be trailing by "half a car."
Oh yea, the new GTOs have finally caught up to early C4's in straight line performance but I would say the new GTOs will need another 16 or 17 years to catch up in stying and handling!
The GTO is a "quick" daily driver but it is visually disappointing and just not really comparable to any Corvette.
Everybody keeps talking about how ugly the GTO is. IMHO it looks better than the C6 does. At least the GTO looks like the Pontiac that it was born from. The C6 just looks like a dust buster driving down the street.
I just found out the 05 GTO will have 400hp and 380tq - 0 to 60 =4.7 This is the new generation. Horse power wars. There has to be over 1/2 dozen cars now that are breaking into the 12's stock. How does this make me feel, I really wouldnt care if I wasnt putting loads of money into my car to reach the high 12's so I can keep my 93 vette ahead of the pack( with the exception of the $50,000. cars). But to be honest with you guys, I think its time for me to come to grips that our vettes have been supassed by new teck hp. Im just a proud vette owner trying to keep Americas # 1 sports car on top and its to costly for me to do it.
to some degree.......but everytime I think of saving for another vette ..I realize that I'm happy with my C4...and only want to
keep up with these new car's performance ....The way I feel is that my vette need only be a 12 second car period!! ...that only takes reasonal cost to achieve this goal........Vettes have always been the car to beat on the streets....this world renown car strikes fear in anyone at a stoplight .....notice how drivers in other cars must always prove they can beat a vette!! With my vette I know I'v got nothing to prove ..but you bet your azz you better come with real performance because you're not only racing this car ...you're racing A legend!!!
I really got flamed in OT by some ignorant people when I said this, but there needs to be a 4 door version of the GTO and its sales would increase.
People told me stuff like 'that would be an insult to the GTOs name to ahve 4 doors or real performance cars dont have 4 doors'
So am I supposed to be stuck with a malibu then to drive when im not driving the Vette? come on!
Some people said get the CTS-V. Well guess what I cant afford one.
The GTO needs 4 doors! anything else is a vette wanna-be.
I agree to a point, I am sick of the world turning to four door performance cars(M5,CTS-V etc, hell even the new Charger), but do it like they did in the old days, have your 2 and 4 door Le Mans and then your 2 door only GTO based on that car.
If you want to go fast do like I did buy 2 vets and race one or 2 and build up only one I make sense too.
Like the rice burner said the other day lets race ,I said sure I lost and I told him hold on let me go get my other vet!
He YELLED back no I know who you are and I have seen the other car run.
So get nitrous you can't lose, the person with the biggest shot wins.
