Wheel refinishing \ powder coating
Okay... I tried searching for this... but could not find any useful info on this. I have a set of sawblades that I wanted to use for race rubber, but I noticed that they have a funky corrosion on the polished lip and the painted finish is rather gross. So here is my list of questions
1. what type of finish is on the wheel. It is a silver finish, but is it painted or powder coated from the factory?
2. Realistically speaking... how much work is it to powder coat the wheels?
3. Is there a lot of prep work for powder coating for painting?
4. Do I need to sandblast the finish off or can I just scuff the surface with some sand paper and be ready for paint?
If anyone can provide a link, if this has been discussed, I'd appreciated it. TIA

I can't comment on how difficult they are to powdercoat but you should strip the old paint and clearcoat off before you do anything. I used Tal-Strip 2 aircraft stripper with excellent results. You'll end up with bare aluminum wheels which you could paint, clearcoat, or powdercoat. I polished mine and didn't re-clear them.

What are the exact steps? I already have the stuff needed for the powder coating (sort of)... I need to know how to prep the surface. I have a sand blaster too... but the 17" wheels won't exactly fit in the cabinet.
I guess I should ask if I'm better off sending the rims off... selling them... or doing the work myself?
Isn't there a member that does coating and cryo work?
Powdercoating can be done in a day, but only if you bring them clean wheels. If they have to clean them for you(most won't) it will take longer and cost more.
I do all my own powder coating and the powder coating itself takes a few minutes to spray on the powder and about thirty minutes to bake for each color, thats all. The metal has to be clean and bare otherwise the powder will not stick to it.
Is the process something they could do in a day? I have the magnesium 98 rims and I'm wondering how they'd looked polished without the silver paint.
Are they really magnesium? I know the other Corvette wheels that were really made out of magnesium (Dymags) had to be painted, to keep the magnesium from breaking down.
