There were some minor external changes to the diff, but I don't think the internals are any different.

It is for a 3-series case however, so still doesn't help the masses with 2.59 & 2.73.

Default 3:73s

I replaced the 2:59 rear in my 87 automatic with 3:73 Richmond gears.
It runs teriffic and although I may have lost a few MPG, its not that noticable and the low end performance is awsome.
Don't be afraid to go with the 3:54 or the 3:73.

However if you're on the highway alot (which I'm not), then I'd say think again.

I read a lot of threads about gears this year and just got 3:07s in my 89 automatic. Feels stronger, RPMs a little higher (and probably a little worse gas mileage) and I'm happy with the overall performance. Unless you really plan to do some serious engine mods the 3:07s should give you the best overall performance on the street.

CTYANK2, how hard is the hardtop to put on? Mine is setting in the garage and I have never put it on and would like to put it on for a while. I still have to go with the 54's because I want that throw you in the back seat(if I had one) accelaration off the line. I know the 07's are probably better for cruisin, but like I said, our vette has only had a little over a thousand miles put on it in about 1 1/2 years, so it won't hurt anything with the 54's in it.

Hardtop installation is easy but it takes two people to lift it up and put it in place. Then two windshield bolts, 2 rear deck bolts (pain in the ___ due to tight space), and two brackets with 5 bolts each side. Once it is on your car you will have more stiffness than coupes. Good luck with the 3:54s.

I get 20 MPG in a LS1 Camaro w 3.42 and a manual w around town and highway mixed. I almost never use 6th gear, and I always drive the car really hard hitting 100mph on a daily basis.
If you have an overdrive tranny there is no reason not to run the 3.54, you'll be happy enough w the mileage.
The power band will really tighten up around and out of corners.
You'll love it if you like to drive hard.
I went from 3.07 to 3.73 in the Dana 44 C4. You can buy my 3.07s for $35+ shipping, I had a local rearend shop do the swap and freshen the rearend for $400 for gears parts and labor.
Do you have a Dana 36 to start with?

I can light up the tires and smoke them nonstop with the 2:59's in it so 54's might make it hard to get going. My biggest gripe with my 91 is the rolling punch from say 40 and above. It just doesn't pull like I think that it should. It pulls hard but my 95 Impala SS with just a few minor mods feels like it pulls harder and the vette has more torque. I know that it has 3:08 gears in it, but it weighs a ton(hi-po land barge). That is what I want to improve the most. Maybe it is just me but my 91 doesn't pull that great from dead stop. I have found that starting off and then nailing it at about 10 mph makes it pull strong. It will catch second doing that but won't from a dead start. That is why I am highly considering the 54's, so it will be evil when you nail it. More opinions please. Hopefully someone with 54's will chime in.

If your 3:07 ring and pinion is in good shape and will fit a D36. Then consider them sold. PM me and we will make arrangements.

Dana 44 gears won't work in a D36.

And even if they were D36 gears they won't work in your 2-series carrier.

If your car came from the factory with 2.xx gears it has a different carrier than if it came with 3.xx gears. Gears are not interchangeable between the two. Aftermarket gears specify which carrier they fit.

Clarification. The "carrier" referred to above, is the internal "diff case", the ring gear carrier, the case the ring gear bolts to, NOT the external carrier casting that bolts to the batwing.
