I am installing my aluminum flywheel today and looking at the bolts that I bought, I am not sure they are long enough. Without the washers, the bolt has about 7/16" of threads going in the end of the crankshaft. With the hardened washer, there is about 3/8" in the crank. The original bolts that came with the DM flywheel hang out about 5/8" and do not have the washers.
My question is washers or no? and if no washers, is 7/16" enough threads in the crank or should I look for longer bolts? Any idea of a good place to pick up the longer bolts. I ordered the bolts I have now online. I am trying to get the car back together today.
I ordered bolts and washers from ARP. You need a hardened washer under the head of the bolt to prevent the head from "biting" into the aluminum and you need the hardened washer to prevent the washer from deforming into the bolt hole which is what happended to me with the bolts and washer that came from Fidanza. Also the design of the ARP bolt is such that they have an unthreded portion next to the head to provide better alignment for the flywheel. The washers also have a radiused internal edge to clear the chamfer under the head of the bolt. Call ARP and get the part number then order them from Summit. Also get assembly lube from ARP.
