My engine is cutting out at 3800 rpm until I disconnected the alternator. I have a 1990 Vette and this makes no sense to me!
If I keep bringing it up to 3800 the motor will stall and not run.
For some strange reason I disconnected the alternator and it was then able to be turned on and run so as a test I connected the alternator again and it is now missing. How is this possible?
I think you have diagnosed the problem, ie the alternator has gone bad. It may be shorting the internal diodes when RPM is raised above 3800. Did you check your Battery voltmeter gauge to see if it starts dropping as you increase your RPM's ?? With alternator connected, slowly raise the RPM's and watch to see if the Voltage starts to drop when you get near the engine cutoff point....I am not an alternator expert, but this sounds like the battery is getting shorted byt the alternator. Good Luck!
