Default MAF sensor screen

I am having PCM for less program a computer for my LT4 Hotcam and he asked if I have the screen removed on my MAF sensor. I have done a little reseach to include TPIS where they show you how much extra flow you get when removing the screen. I have searched the forum and read to threads, I would like to heart some other thoughts, I am sending the work order in tomorrow. Thanks

I have a stock LT4. The only mods I have done is the cut lid, ported the MAF, TB bypass, and AeroChamber mufflers. I did not have a dyno done for before and after, but I can say that all of those made a good improvement, or at least enough to feel. The simple freebies that I did can be debated as to whether they have any real improvements or not... but they are free so why not?

I did all of the above all at once so I'm not certain which made a difference and which did not. I can say that before the mods I could not brake the tires loose on a rolling punch... now I have troubles keeping them planted. I hope this helps some.

What year do you have? or motor?

Thanks, I have the 96 LT4 Hot cam in my 64 Corvette Grand Sport. Clarence, interesting article, if I have the computer (OBD1) programmed to recognize the increase flow would I not see an increase in performance?

Volume of air in and air out is what makes power. removing the screens is a simple task, just follow the instructions. Might as well take out the heat sinks while you are at it. The biggest problem with our computer engines is that they are so refined, it is hard to find big power increases in any one place. But lots of little ones add up. 100, 1% improvementrs = 100% improvement.

The heat sinks are the posts sticking up with in the sensor?

yes. if you hollow everything except the sensor itself... you should end up with a hollow metal tube with some wires in the middle (the sensor itself). I did mine with a cutting wheel and a dremel. My neighbor used a plasma cutter somehow... the key is to cut the fins out and sand\polish the surface flat. you want a constant flow of air with little to no turbulance.

I used a hacksaw to cut the heat sinks out of mine. Put the housing in a vise and some duct tape on either side of the heat sinks on the inside walls to protect the walls.

ok the MAF sensor on the LT4 is a little different, only thing to do is remove the screen. LT4 owners I have 2 sensors on top and three on the bottom, can someone who has a LT4 verify that. I want to make sure I did not break any.

There is like a snap-ring that holds the screen in place on the LT4....if you carefully remove the snap-ring you can remove the screen without damaging it.....I damaged mine..

I have been running without the screen for a couple of years now with no apparent problems.....gains...who knows....maybe 5-10hp??

Isn't the sole purpose of the screens to srtaighten out the airflow? Just wondering

Yes....creates laminar airflow

....but on LT1/4 the intake system is fairly straight so the incoming air isn't as turbulent as on some of the f-body cars where the intake system is more curved....

..or so I have heard

Different case but interesting... on my friends TT stealth, we removed the "honeycomb" type of maf screen. It completely messed the car up, wouldnt idle or rev smoothly. Granted it was a different animal, but those screens do straiten out the air. When you start getting a higher volume of air flow like on a Turbo car, my guess is thats when the screen/s come into play.

Thanks, I want to confirm that there are 5 sensors in the LT4 MAF sensor, can one of you with an LT4 confirm that?
