Default Air Filter Question

I am thinking of changing the Air Filter on my 86 L98 to a open cone style air filter.

I am wondering does this cone style filter have to be mounted on the pipe just before the MAF???

I have seen it mounted right onto the throtle body aswell and was wondering in this situation what happens to the MAF???

What are my options??? any info would help
Thanks

All this will accomplish besides space savings is increased IAT readings.Hell for that matter the older fan clutch cars(stangs) would get terrible fan wash from it.......I guess it just looked cool.

In 1990 GM began using the speed density system on TPI engines. The speed density system does not use a MAF sensor. The engines you saw with that filter on the front of the throttle body would be on speed density controlled engines.

MAF sensors do not work well with ANY air turbulence. This is what Shoregasm was refering to with the "terrible fan wash"

As stated above... the cone filter works with the later speed density cars, but not well. And if you install it on the MAF cars it will create a level of turbulance that will basically hinder performance instead of helping it.

If installed on the SD systems, the cone sits on the throttle body and sucks hot air right off the front of the motor. While this isn't much of a problem when moving, it will cause a severe decrease in power in typical around town driving. I had one one my TPI Trans Am and was very disappointed. I would discourage you from this mod.

well I know this isn't recommended but I did it on my 90(cone filter on the TB) and love it.I bought the car a few years ago and have owned many Corvettes I notcied this car was "lacking" I tuned it up and did alot of tweeking here and there.I installed a K&N and cut the lid then I was cleaning the radiator and installed a K&N cone to crank the car in the garage for a few weeks and noticed how its was "sucking" alot more air took it for a road trip and was impressed.I like it alot.
