I'm planning on changing my timing chain & sprockets and am thinking about a 2-piece timing cover in case I change the cam in the future. Will a 2-piece cover clear the stock water pump? If so, any particular brand (I'm assuming it'd have to be steel)? I heard the L98 water pumps are short leg with limited clearance between the back of pump and engine block.
I just went thru this. I used a Cloyes 2 piece cover which is substantially more thick. My Milodon water pump didn't clear, but the old stock one did. I ended up using an Edelbrock hi flow rather than a stocko and it fit just fine because of the design of the cover plate on the back of the pump.
Reader's digest version: If you look at the cover plate on the back of your intended pump and it's flat, you're probably OK. If it has a molded shoulder around the perimiter by the bolts you may have problems. If you use a stamped steel timing cover, you're probably OK with either pump as well.
I had one i put on the motor, then went to put the stock 85 pump on and it was a good 1/4 inch from the block. So I pulled it off, and went with a one piece. I sure am glad it was out of the car and on a stand.
Thanks! My pump has the shoulder and bolts around the perimiter (it's only ~20K miles old so I don't want to swap it out). Think I'll try a 2-piece stamped steel cover then and revert to the original one if that fails.

I run the Comp Cams aluminum 3 piece cover and it clears the factory water pump without issue. Though you may have to shave a couple of the water pump backing plate bolt heads as I had to do on my '87. The 3 piece difers from the 2 piece in that the lower crank section is also removeable without dropping the pan.
As a benefit, the aluminum aftermarket timing covers make excellent cam walk bearing/bushing (forward loading of the cam) foundations. The factory covers and even the S/D stamped steel aftermarket cover flexed considerably when the cam bearing pushed forward.
I will make comment from my experience that everyone who uses these 2 piece or 3 piece covers winds up with oil leaks.

Chris,
Who makes the monoblade on your motor? It appears from your signature pic that yours has the original TPI plate, which is something I would like to retain. Cost please?
That pic in my sig is before I changed to the monoblade. Airzona Speed and Marine monoblade. But It looks like you could take off their top plate and replace it with your stock one...Its a quility peice but has no ports for the PVC valve...which is ok for modded setups, but I did not no it when I ordered it. Still I like it even though it made no difference in HP on my car but I am pretty sure my small cam is the limiting factor.
