Default ABS option

Hey!

When did ABS become an option, then standard on C4?

Does anyone have some links with the differences/improvements from year to year of the C4?

I had a 1989 Corvette in 1989. I remember alot of warranty work with the ABS system and warning light. Is there any reason for concern to buy a 1986-1991 C4 with ABS?

Thanks!
Jamie

Funny you should be asking about ABS. I have an '88 with ABS issues. I've had the car about 5 months and the ABS quit about a month ago. My impression is that the most difficult part is diagnosing the computer because that takes a special GM scanner that many dealers have gotten rid of. Otherwise it looks like a good digital voltmeter and a troubleshooting chart will go a long way. ABS is sort of like EFI in that once you understand the various sensors and what they're used for it isn't to hard to understand. From reading the posts it seems like keeping the wheel sensors free of debris is the biggest issue.
Here are some links to ABS issues on this forum.

As for buying an older corvette with ABS, I say get what you want. There are so many of them out there that all possible problems have occurred and been diaganosed and repaired many times over. I'm sure there isn't any problem you could have that some forum member hasn't already encountered. Good Luck.

I don't recall ABS ever being an option on Corvettes. ABS became standard equipment in 1986.

Testing and troubleshooting the ABS is best done with a GM Tech-1 Diagnostic reader with the ABS module installed. The GM Service Manuals (available at www helminc.com and you should have a set for your car! They are an invaluable tool if you do your own work) have sections dealinb with ABS troubleshooting and repair.

BTW, Tech-1 scanners can be found on eBay and most reputable repair facilities will have them or a comparable system. FWIW, our local Chevy dealer still has a number of Tech-1's that are used by the tech staff.

Yep, never an option, it became standard in`86.

86-89 first version
90-94 second version
95&96 third version

*note `95 ZR1s still had the second version
