Coolant flush "101" ..

There is a good article in this months "Corvette magazine" .. Cooling Trends. Quote: "Talking about different coolant formulas or pondering the heartbreak of waterpump cavitation just isn't as exciting as talking about aluminum heads or ignition mods. That's why most of us pay a lot less attention to the cooling system than we should. But this system is well worth knowing about, and even more worth maintaining - the health of your Corvette literally depends on it all working the way it should".
When Wendell finished my new 355ci. motor, he filled it up with "Dexcool", sounds cool right. I had to fix a leak from the water pump & consequently lost a bunch of coolant, so I filled it up with the green stuff. As I discovered here on the forum, mixing them is a big "No No" .. So today I flushed the system, wow, was I surprised at just how much black residue came out, the motor only has 2K. mi. and the radiator is a couple years old, man em I glad I did that!
Now after reading this latest article on coolants, I really thought twice about using Dexcool in my 86 vette, as Dexcool only showed up in 1996. So I discussed it with my German car experts, and they totally agreed, "forget Dexcool" .. so the bottom line, I decided to use the Mercedes coolant which may be similar to some of the other carboxylate compound coolants, like Dexcool, but won't react to residue from previous coolants that have been in the car for many years.
