Default EGR Question

On my 86 L98 Vette I have a hose connecting between the Exhaust Manifold and up into the intake its coated with some kind of foil wrapping, its on the passenger side and goes over the valve cover. Mine is leaking like crazy makes the same kinda sound leaking exhuast makes just wondering if you can delete the hose all together or would that screw up the EGR system?????????

Thanks

Not entirely sure about that, though I've known some to just delete the EGR setup all together. So plugging that system shouldn't hurt. I say shouldn't but you never know, you may get a trouble code thrown at you if you did it, but the man I know who welded the EGR holes shut on his 84 experienced no trouble codes. May not be the same for the TPI setup though. To play it 100% safe, you could just replace the hose. But I'm sure many 86 and up owners will tell you the most valuable info.

This "hose" supplies the EGR circuit w/ exhaust gas to send into the engine. It is there strickly for emissions. The engine will run fine w/o it, but the ECU will trigger a trouble code. You will also fail emissions testing.

The connection is made w/ a crimp ring. i.e. Once crimped, you will have a very difficult time reusing it. This is not an air tight connection. If the crimp has rusted off or the tube has been comprimised, this would be the source of noise. Effectively you have an exhasut leak under the hood. Just make sure none of the wires/hose come close to it, as these will eventually be burned thru. And the foil,... good luck trying to save/reuse it. It is there for saftey,.... burned wire thingy.

I removed the tube and mig welded a nickle over the whole in ehaust manifold. I made an aluminum block off plate for the intake manifold port. I throw no codes with mine. Do you have emissions testing on the island. Non here in the okanagan

On my 86, I tried to replace the crimped ring but could not find a way to get to it with a tool . I was able to reuse the crimp ring by grinding off the crimped part of the ring so that I had a C shaped ring. After placing the modified ring over the flanges of both tubes, I put a SS hose clamp over the whole deal and tightened, It has been leak free for 1.5 years. You can buy the replacement insulation on line, but I left mine bare and made sure no wires were near it. Later models use a flange and two bolts. I guess the general recognized that mistake.
Even if you don't have emissions testing, you should make sure the EGR is connected and working , otherwise you may have a problem with pinging or detonation at part throttle. The addition of small amounts of exhaust gases into the intake works to cool the combustion temperature and reduce detonation in addition to reducing emmisions.

No theres no emissions testing on the island here so I dont need to worry about that do you get any pinging from your engine since you removed that pipe and is the rest of your EGR still in place ????

Let me know

I completely removed all egr components. I have had no problems after removal. My motors runs pretty cool 160-180, which helps combat detonation. So far so good

Do you think if I remove just the hose connecting between the Exhaust Manifold and up into the intake I will have any problems if I leave the rest of the EGR in place ?????

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you block off the intake and exhaust ports properly. Getting rid of that ugly tube was my only goal and as a bonus, easy valve cover removal.

Exactly what my plan is also, I just finished polishing my engine and I am simply trying to clean it up getting rid of anything I can.

Thanks for the info

If you just block off the EGR tube the engine will throw a code 32 during cruzing when coolant temp is above 175deg F.

To avoid this you can run a low temp T-stat & fan switch, use a diode or relay to feed back the signal from the ECM to the EGR Solenoid into the EGR Temp Sensor, or you can have your chip programmed to avoid EGR.

wouldn't a 'slug' have been cheaper to use?
