Default Erratic/Surging idle

My 88 has recently began suffering from a surging idle, most prominent when cold. Car has thrown no codes whatsoever. I am fairly certain that there are no vacuum leaks as well. It doesn't really affect performance; more of an annoyance than anything else. Anybody else experience a similar problem and have any luck correcting? Thanks in advance!

If your idle is surging..."hunting"...then you have a vacuum leak.

Save yourself the time, frustration and dollars...

Buy a Felpro intake gasket set and replace them...all of them.

You'll be golden in an afternoon...and you can use the oppurtunity to give your dremel some exercise. Open up the plenum and runners and gasket match the intake while you're there. Have fun!

Mtlsphere, i said i was fairly certain there are no vacuum leaks, But of course not 100%. (i don't think there is any way of ever being 100% sure on these cars...lol) So you figure just do a complete intake set and check ALL lines hoses, etc? I agree with it apart that far, a little port matching may be inevitable Thanks for your advice!

I'm speaking from experience. I fought the same condition for the better part of a year. I checked everything and thought the same as you. I even replaced the switch on the brake pedal for the cruise control. Still the idle was hunting. I swapped more and more parts and still the idle was hunting...

Your idle is hunting for a reason.

The reason is a vacuum leak. No codes is a clue that everything is working.

But don't take my word for it. I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. Everyone needs to learn the hard way.

Mtlsphere,
But i don't want to learn the hard way.... lol I'm not doubting you at all, it very much makes sense, like you said: No codes indicates all is ok, and it definitely is a classic symptom of a vacuum leak. i'm just open to everyones suggetions. I can't lay the car up for even a day right now, so just taking all into consideration. I'm definitely going to do the entire intake set when i get a day to do it. I appreciate the advice, and no matter what, it can only be for the better regardsless. I just wish i had a nice cam and miniram to bolt on whilei have it apart...............:

i've seen bad IAC's cause a hunting idle
i've seen bad injectors cause a hunting idle
i've seen a loose reluctor ring inside the distrib cause a hunting idle

food for thought
