Hello all,
My question is in regards to an 84 w/ auto.
Can I permanently bypass the heater core by directly connecting a single hose from intake back to water pump? Will that adversely affect coolant flow? I heard that it may cause the engine to overheat. Has anyone done this and has it been trouble free? If you are wondering why: I plan on redoing the interior over the winter. On a previous resto, I dedid the interior and the the heater core leaked and ruined the new carpet!! Since I never use the heat in the vette (summer car), I was just going to eliminate it and clean up the engine bay by routing a single hose from intake to water pump. Thanks in advance!! Pete
If I were doing what you are, I would remove the hose fittings from the water pump and intake manifold, and replace them with pipe plugs. Water doesn't flow through that circuit when the heater control valve is off, so you know it isn't necessary for cooling, or anything else. Why complete an unnecessary circuit with an unnecessary hose, that can break or leak on you, some day? If you're going to eliminate the heater, eliminate it ALL.
i eliminated a heater core on a '76 Monte Carlo and simply plugged the holes where the feed and return lines were. did not notice any differences in coolant temp.
