Default Question about 4th gear with TransGo Shift Kit

I installed the TransGo shift kit in my 86 Vette's 700r4 last week. Also, I went with .500 boost valve, and .283 int/rev valve, and deep trans oil pan. I love the shifting, but the only complaint I have is the vette don't shift into 4th gear now until 71mph. Stock it was 52mph. Why does it shift into 4th so late? If anyone installed transgo and had the same trouble, then I am interested to hear your experience. Other than that, the car shifts awsome with the shift kit. The only way it will shift into 4th at lower than 71mph is for me to let up on the gas peddle some. Then it shifts, but will easily downshift into 3rd if I push gas. Is this how it should work, or what? Thanks!

Check the archives for my post about 18mths ago; I go into detail about CORRECT TVS cable adjustment according to an expert. This MAY need adjusting on yours...

I think you are referring to 3rd, not 4th. Your 4th shouldn't be shifting untill like 100+MPH.

3rd should shift around 52mph (+ or - how your linkage is and or whatever yur shift points are set at (governors)).

If you are refering to WOT shift points I too would suspect that the upshift at 71mph is the 2-3 shift.

The WOT shift points are controlled by the weights & springs in the governor; the part throttle shifts can be tweaked, as mentioned, with the TV cable.

My TransGo like shift kit was installed when the A4 was performance rebuilt with raised shift points so I don't yet know where the WOT 3-4 upshift occurs. However the 2-3 upshift comes at 100mph.

Also, after the rebuild my part throttle upshifts were comming too low and harsh so I backed off a little on the TV cable to raise and soften them a little.

I guess what I am saying is that it used to shift into overdrive at about 52mph. Is the overdrive the same as the 4th gear? My up shift light is now staying on until I reach about 71mph, and then she decides to shift. So what made that change? Thanks!

Did you install the "orange" spring in the 3-4 shift valve?, If you did, remove it & put back the stock one, this will solve it. I do not know why Trans-Go has you do this, it always creates problems. That is why I modify these kits (do not add the orange spring) to prevent this.

No, I did NOT install the orange spring in the 3-4 valve. The directions says if the gear ratio is 3.73 or deeper. I have 3.07s, so I left that alone. It is shifting, but it is just shifting at about 71-72mph. I am used to it shifting into overdrive at 52mph. I just wish I could figure it out. Other that the overdrive shifting too late, I am VERY HAPPY with the shifting. But the damn shift light keeps coming on now when driving around at normal speeds (the speed limit ) Any other sugestions? Here are the directions I followed. I circled what I did. I went with firmest shift setup, but in automatic mode. I did not want the stick shift setup. I also installed .500 boost valve and .283 int/rev valve.

My trans does the same thing just adjust the cable.
How is the 2-1 down shift?
If it is hard adj cable.
Slide it in all the way and mash the gas , then pull it out about 1/8 inch.

2-1 downshift is very good. Actually all downshifts feel very good. Could the TV cable adjustment likely be the problem? I have not messed with its origional adjustment. But then again, I am a newbie to transmissions, and have put many hours into just putting it back together clean and getting the thing working good. Anything else it could be? Governor was not touched from stock, just what I mentioned above was it. I did install kit according to the FIRMEST shift. Could any of that be the cause? Thanks!

You have an 86 with a 700r4 and if you did not reset the tv cable it will be lucky to shift at all.
Adjust the cable as I said earlier .Don't feel bad I did the same thing and I also could not get it to go into low gear manuel shifting it.
I had to jack it back up and adjust that too and all I did was remove the pin and washer, never touched the adj nut under neath .
I would re check everything.
just push in the silver D thing and push the cable all the way in.
get inside the car and mash the gas .
Drive the car .
Ifyoiu don't like the shifts then push in the D and pull the tv cable out about 1/8 inch and that will make it shift harder.
My shift light comes on all the time I just goose it a little and it goes off or wait until you hit 75 mph.
