Is there any system out there that works as a true ram air system?
The license plate removal operation is nice, and probably works but in Ohio I must have a front plate.
Everyone seems to hate the breathless kit
Vararam may or may not have one soon..........
I'm registered in Summit Co so know what you mean. Fortunately I drive mostly in SE NY and only spend a copla weeks a year in OH; not been bothered for no front tag...yet.
I wonder if they would hassle you if you had a ram air at the tag location??
Anyway, SLP makes one for '85-'89 Vettes and TPIS makes a setup for all L98s. I run the SLP and I believe Vic'89 runs the TPIS.
The SLP basically is a closed stock style intake with a flat tube that extends down the front of the radiator shroud with a opening in the air stream in front of the radiator. I believe the TPIS is the inverted style that draws cold air through a hole cut in the radiator shroud, but is sturdier than the Vararam.

never mind the effect--look at the prices. there has to be another option. these ram airs are basically injection molded plastic (you can find the same technology at the 99 cent store) and they cost an arm and a leg. what a cash cow.
does anyone know a homemade remedy? i know that the hood to radiator clearance is problem on my 85, and and the flat, short height flow off the radiator looks like a real hi-po choker.
the only cost efficient solution i can see is to rig a conical type filter in the engine compartment. but that would need some sort of plastic or rubber tube with hose clamps to allow inclusion of the maf between the throttle body and the filter. but this may create a new set of problems.
the stock 85 filter is placed on the front side of the radiator. as previously mentioned, this creates an air choke due to the lack of radiator to hood clearance. logically, it seems that the chevy engineers valued cooler air over higher air flow. if a high flow filter is put into the engine compartment, then you will be dealing with higher air temps and a potentially reduced air flow (caused by a no-grille high speed hood). it looks like six of one and a half dozen of another. the answer maybe pre-radiator air than can run around the radiator. or maybe it's something rigged in the engine compartment.
there has to be a cheaper, better way. does anyone know it or have any data on different set-up flow rates?

i picked up a breathless performance ram air set up at carlise this past year and love it .it installed nicely and make the engine compartment look alot less cluttered.some people like em and some people dont but i love mine.i also plan on a bigmouth to help scoop some more air.
I've seen the reverse ram air that comes through the radiator shroud it works pretty good, I'm in Miami so I opted for the front plate ram air (used $150) after using would have paid the full price.
I run the SLP ram air and it added about .5mph (i.e. 5chp) to trap speed over cut lid and K&N.
If you have a pre '90 L98 and are not now running a K&N the SLP is a bargain as it comes with a stock K&N for around $120.
You could fab your own setup similar to SLP if you cut the front edge from the stock housing, glass over the top vent area and add a scoop that extends down through the front of the radiator air shroud (you need to cut a rectangule from the lower end of the shroud.
Last season I ran with a home-made BM air dam and saw no trap speed improvement but there were several possible issues that could have effected results:
-I didn't have the air dam angled to the proper angle
-my L98 is having fuel delivery problems, which could taint data
I have the Breathless air rammer and the air box is warped from the heat badly. It's a good idea just made out of cheap material. I may just take measurements and fab it out of aluminum

I like Pipe's idea... find what you like and make a copy from aluminum if you have the inclination...
If you go with the licence plate ram route you might have to come up with the diffuser... that is a premuim piece and would be difficult to make imho...
No front tag and your tired of being hassled ? How about buying the "Big Mouth" ( your welcome Eric ) and mounting the license plate to the Big Mouth... lay it right inside... it will probably get a little tattered on the bottom edge over time, but that is hardly a legal issue, is it ?
We have that law out here, but I have yet to be hassled in 9 years of C4 ownership... I have heard on the news they are going to write tickets for no front plate in Los Angeles once in a while... just more citation revenue and camera ticket machines being able to do their job... just an idea...
I thnk the A/O forced air intake adds quite a bit of power! i think one guy got about 9rwhp standing still on a dyno with a leaf blower pointed at it. thats a really good gain for a intake. although it is the most expensive. i would like to have something that has big proven performance numbers like that
