Just bought my 1st -- 1996 Coupe Auto LT-1. One of the codes indicates a performance axle (G92). Anybody know the exact rearend ratio? Does this code mean (1) a heavy duty unit of a same ratio standard rearend, or (2) simply a different ratio other than stock?
Also, there are about 35-40 different codes listed on the OEM decal. I have found some of the high performance codes on different web sites, but not the more run-of-the-mill codes. Can anyone help?
As you noted, G92 simply designates "performance ratio". As the standard ratio varies from year to year, different transmissions and even coupe vs convertible in some cases, so does the "performance ratio". You will find another "G" code that will designate the precise ratio your car was built with. The G92 doesn't mean heavy duty or anything else other than the optional ratio.

In the later automatic cars, and perhaps all A4 C4s I'm pretty sure that this always means you have the 3.07 gear. Very nice option and very desirable. I know it doesn't sound like a lot of gear, but with the low speed and 2nd speed ratios of 700Rs and 4L60Es it makes it much snappier than the standard rear gear while also retaining great highway mileage. A great compromise for us with multi-purpose cars. I retained the ratio even when swapping to a D44 bacause I was so happy with it.

Don't forget also, the relatively small, compared to earlier cars, tire size.
My A4 car has the "standard" axle ratio if 3.07. The "G92" for my car is 3.31:1.
The G92 is an option that triggers the 3.07 in a coupe. Its no different from any other D36 rear end, and sometimes you can order the 3.07 without the G92, making it a useless option.
3.31 in the autos is only for 84 cars.
In some verts, the G92 can trigger EITHER the 3.07 or 2.73 rear.
The differential case should have the ratio stamped on it. You can also look for a yellow tag on the driver's side of the webbed part of the housing near the mounting bushing. The tags have a code on them:
CQT 2.59
CQU 2.73
CQW 3.07
CQR 3.45

Plus the RPO list that had the "G92" on it will have the ratio option code on it also. It will be the other "G" number.
Thanks for all the help-so it sounds like I have a 3.07 since my "other" axle code just happens to be G-44. Essentially both codes mean the same thing.

NO! For YOUR particular car, yes, but for mine, the "G92" is a "GW4". If all "G92's" equaled 3.07 or "G44", this thread would have ended after the first response.
At the top of the C4 Tech/Performance page, (click on "back", once from here), find the "sticky" thread titled, "FAQ". You will find the meaning of most of your RPO codes. Then say thank you to bogus.
