hey there, i am new to this board and looking for some help. i am getting ready to pull the motor on my 84 and need tips. is it easiest to split the motor and tranny to pull them out? will they come out together? what is the easiest? what are some things i need to watch out for on my first vette pull? the transmission will be getting rebuilt so it does have to come out. thanks.
I just pulled mine on the 90. Dont remove the hood everything clears with it on. Was nothing to split the trans and motor so it isnt as hard as one would think. Just double check all the wires and ground are removed that is always a gotcha. Other then that get a 6 pack and have at it.
Which side is better to grab it from? Is it better to go from driver's side or passenger's? Does it matter? Is there a good/great hoist choice? A friend needs some help and I foolishly volunteered.
I don't know if its better; but I pulled mine from the driver's side. '90. Hood on. Car on jack stands. Removed the tranny first, used a drive up ramp to slide it down, then on cardboard to pull it out the back end.
I first checked twice to make sure I had all the wires (like grounds) disconnected from below. I removed the distributer to get at some of them...pulled the AC compressor/condensor aside and PS pump aside, removed the water pump, etc. did not remove the balancer. did not remove the radiator or any part of it.
Lifted the engine slightly to take pressure off the mounting bolts. pulled them, brought the engine up a foot or so. Found a wire I had missed tugging at the block (go figure!). Came out like a charm. No trouble at all.
I pulled mine with the tranny still bolted to it. I did have to take the hood off to do it. But it's not that big of a deal to put it back on once you know what you're doing. It's alot easier for me because I don't have a tranny jack and its a pain to do it with cinder blocks and plywood and a hydraulic jack. It's alot easier to just yank it out with the engine and set it down to unbolt it.
If you do decide to pull the tranny with the engine just make sure that you unbolt the torque converter with everything still in the car. It's hard to get to with the engine and tranny on the ground.
I took my time and got everything out in just under 4 hours. But I've done it before, and that helps out a whole lot.
