Default Thermostat housing question

I'm replacing my water pump, and thought I'd do the thermostat while I'm at it. I'm having a hard time cracking the thermostat housing, however. It looks like someone in the past has gooped it up with something, maybe to stop a leak. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to get this thing apart? Thanks.

Tap it with a rubber mallet. Thread the bolts back in a little bit while you tapping it so it doest fly away fall and break.

Be careful. Those thermostat housings are REAL hard to come by.

I see your bracket/clamp is not connected either. When I changed my hoses, I didn't think to try to screw that thing in first, and once it's all together it seems about impossible to do.

On the housing, maybe it's worth it to pull it out of the car? You only have to undo one more hose clamp. Then you can work on it more carefully. You'll need to clean all that RTV crap off anyway once you get it apart.

Yea, I unbolted everything I could.
One more clamp? What about that hard line that runs up from the housing?

Well, I guess not one more. But from your picture it looks like you just need to disconnect the two? (or one?) smaller hoses that hit the housing from the top. They are sorta annoying connectors you have to pinch to remove.

I believe there are three big hoses, the water pump, the radiator, and the one on that long metal extension, plus the one or two small ones, and that's it hosewise. Then the bolts that hold it together, one or two holds the housing in place also, and that clampy strap thing that you already have disconnected. And it ought to come right out. It just seems it would be easier to deal with it out of the car.

Looks like the last guy JB welded it. If so, check JB's website for any additional info that might help you get it apart. Gonna be a tough cookie if he did JB it.
