Clear Top Repair
I bought a blue plexi top a few month ago. Its in great shape EXCEPT for the fact that the clearcoat is peeling away. Anyway to repair this other than replacing the glass?

domonic, hate to conterdict anyone , but YES there is .I just got done repairing a buddies 99 ss camero t-tops . 209 754 1195 his name is joe marino. you can ask him how it came out so you know it works first . here is the proceedure . use a wool cutting pad with megs heavycut cleaner .use a rotary on low speed . keep it moving so as not to burn . then go megs80 on med with a wool pad . then here is the the key use a schegal blue pad with a porter cable da on 5 with #7megs machine glaze it will take 3 passes at least to get the shine you want . but it will work . Or if you have second thoughts on doing it your self you could send it to me and I will do it for free for you . You have allways helped me when I had ?s and it would be the least I could do to repay your kindness . i will alert joe that you may call to ask about his top. pm me if you would like me to do it for you and i will give you my mailing add.

I've removed the "coating" that you're refering to and we've refinished it with "catalyzed urethane". The top also had some of the "crazing" and the refinish certainly improved the appearance of the top from the inside out.
The painter was a bit skeptical at first and after he saw the results he felt he could have actually been a bit more "aggresive" with the prep and improved the "inside-out" appearance. This top hasn't been back on and "roadtested" for months or years but I've no reason to doubt the quality of the repair. I'd do it again with "no second thoughts"!
The "polish" treatment should also do equally as well on a top that has no crazing but my thoughts on the "first attempt" was to try and improve that condition also. I'm not recommending "you do it" but "I would again"!

i like the glazing process after the removal . all one has to use is furnature polish to keep it t*ts. the furnature polish replaces the oils that the sun bakes out .

Post another thread with the results when you're finished, I'm very interested to see the results and get the details of the process as my daughter's '99 coupe has an acrylic top too that's in sad shape. It'll make a good spring project for me. And just for the record, I'm sending some positive thoughts your way...I have confidence it'll come out great!

Ummmm....not mine. I took both my original one and the GM replacement and they don't have any blue hue to them. I have seen pics of the ones that are blue-tinted, but mine are definitely black (dark, dark gray).

Maybe it is a Bronze top..I'll look when I get home and see is they have any markings as to the tint. I have one of each.

I chipped the corner off mine a couple years back and took it to Melrose T-tops and they did an exchange on the spot for a refirbished top with new OEM lexan "glass" for around $650. They carried both colors and I belive they also offer a non OEM one for about half that. They even aligned it for me on the spot. Very helpfull guy there and the top looks like it is brand new from the factory. If you are concerned with the serial number match they can refurbish your top also. They are located a few miles east of DeKalb, IL.
