My Bonneville Project up date
#242
Well, gang, In the five miles that are timed We built a 220 mph car!
No matter what we did, 28" 27" , 26" Tires We allways ended up at the same point.
The car was always still excelerating at the end and I know it would do something in the high 225-228 in 7 miles. But that does not count for anything at Bonneville.
The last run Friday morning was fantastic for me though, the early morning sunrise, the smell of race fuel, I just wanted to run and run
but alas I pulled the chute at mile 6 and the end of speed week was a reality. Ran 198 at the 2.25 mile, 210 AT 3 miles, 215 AT 4 miles and 218.75 at 5 miles and 219.85 at 5.25 miles. ending the run at 7200 rpm.
next year we will do the following , Windtunnel testing, closer ratio tranny, Some work on the scoupe design i.e ( take off the samco and expose the throttle body to the whole scoupe). And Corey is allready dreaming up a new manifold
The LT5 took the punishment like the king it its. It ran as strong on the last pull and it did on the first one, it is one tough critter!!!!
We are going to the Texas mile in Oct, it will be fun to see how it does with the 1500# of lead removed, and the dana 44 back inplace.
There is a huge difference between running on salt, and pavement and I hope to make 200 mph in the mile.
Thanks for all your support, we raised close to 20,000 for the Texas Childrens Hospital, with tee shirt sales and the web site.
Please keep us in mind, when you have an extra 25 bucks or so and donate to www.racing.texaschildrens.org.
Oh and wait till you see the pictures of the beast on the salt, it was just stunning.
Also I owe a special thanks to my all my crew, with a big thumbs up to Rick Harden crewchief, and Corey and Kevin at Henderson performace, for trying every thing in the book!

in response to how it handled, it behaved very well over all but was a handful to drive as the salt is slick, from 10 mph to 210 mph Actually it drove like it was on rails, until we tried taking some weight out of the rear. I had to pull the chute to prevent a spin in mile 4 of one run, it was doing the 1,2 boogie and pulled before it could finish the C-4 shuffle. When we put it back in , it was very solid again, It was not that much weight about 100# so I was really surprised at the change in handling.
The sound, well, I never thought it could rap that High, sounded like a 12 year that was kicked in the nuts!

Congratulations on running over 200mph!!! How many of us can say we have broke that barrier. The video footage says it all. Let us know when you take the beast to the Texas mile.

Dave, This has been the most interesting thread. You have made it possible for us to fallow along from start to finish. I myself am looking forward to your next chapter of THE BEAST!

I was just looking at the date of the first post, 10/26/08 was when I gutted the car and started the build. 8 months start to finish, I look back and wonder how we did that! Oh yeah, now I remember, I think we slept on tuedays. Rick and I both lost about 25 # on the project, we would laugh and refer to it as the Bonneville diet.
Oh and here is a video that I have not posted yet. It is a run that I had to pull the chute just past mile 3, watch the mountain in the back ground , I was drifting all over the track, We had just taken weight out of the car, and man was it squirly at about 215 mph, But the funny thing is the end of the clip, see our pits are at mile 4 by the timing tower where you have to go to get your time slip after each run. Well when the car went right , then left and going left again I pulled the chute, as it would turn out I was rolling out the return road, and i looked over at the pits, thought, well why stop here, so I just coasted into my own pit. My wife just sits in her chair like nothing has happened, and as I get out of the car, the Timeing guy comes running up and hands me my slip, he was laughing his *** off and told me that in his 40 years of doing this he had never seen that one. Then he told me to expect and *** chewing . (which I never got) He told me it was the coolest move he had ever seen and after looking at the video and the reaction of the folks sitting there its hard to believe, that i was about to spin the car at 215 40 secs ago!

No, but thats why there a portajohns at the starting line I ran the car 3 more times with the weight out, it was the same everytime, had to just open my hands up and not grip the wheel, but rather just float my fingers on top of the wheel to prevent imput and ride it out.( I was really happy when we put the weight back in )
Wife took the only shot of the car with the chute out on the return
road, this was zoomed way in I was still going about 80 mph.

Yikes is right. Is the salt rough or is the car very stiff? I know you wouldn't want the suspension sloppy but the ride does look very rough for speeds of 200+. I always thought the salt to be like hard packed sand.

Tommy its that rough, first mile is very loose from everyone spinning,
then the rest is kind of rutted from spins, and 400 mph streamliners ripping up the salt. Also I could see all the exit tracks as people turned out early, those 4 in wide tires, are not so good for cornering and they leave visual grooves on the race surface.
Fu the car pulled as strong on the last pull as it did on the first. And
running the long course is the worlds longest dyno pull!

Do they not rake the track at all? I would love to go to Bonneville and will one day..perhaps next year. Dave, do you think the C4 is a good car for top speed or, is there something that might be a better choice. The sound of the LT-5 is incredable I must say and very durable too but I wonder if the body design might be holding it back.
