Default Coolant Overflow Question

I've been catching a slight wiff of antifreeze when driving the ZR-1 but no over heating issues noticed.

I've done a quick visual inspection while its hot sniffing to try to find the source of the smell. Today I found a very small puddle just behind where the right front wheel was on the garage floor.

I looked as best I could under the reservoir for any sign of a leak but nothing obvious. I can't believe there is an overflow tube like an old '67 but do see something that looks like it may run down behind the fender.

I'm headed to the manual to look it up but figured I'd be lazy first and post here?

OK just spent some quality time with the 1991 Service Manual and realize how stupid my overflow question was

Gotta get under it and look harder for the source of the leak

My 1994 ZR1 sat most of the winter, ran the engine about every 4 -weeks during the winter period. When I took it for about a 10 mile run this year, the same thing happen. I had a very small puddle of coolant under the car.

After that it has been running fine no issues.

You need a high quality light to survey the situation.

My guess is its the rubber hose that goes into your overflow coolant tank.

Make sure the screw on the clamp is tight on that rubber hose or you will get a slight leak- drip every few seconds etc.

Thanks guys I think/hope you are right and its the hose from the upper tank to the lower!!!

I'll yank the inner fender off to get better access Sunday. I'm taking a 2000 mile road trip to Bowling Green and the area around Tail of the Dragon next weekend so need to be sure there is no problem lurking.

Don't forget about the rock-slide between the Foothills Pkwy and the Tabcat Bridge.

BUT...., rumor has it that the TOD could be re-opened by next week.

If you're in the Nashville area anytime, send me a PM and we'll linkup.

THanks MArk,

I shot u a PM. We are planning to run from BG to Robbinsville via the Cherohala Skyway Monday. We'd spend the night and then make a loop up 129 to Moonshiner28 early Tuesday and then try to find VA from there!

Tony, I had that upper surge tank crack on the old 91 Z we had. Split at the seam right up near the brass neck. New one was cheap and in stock.

I'll check it and then find out where you found one if it needs to be replaced. I'll probably replace the overflow tank since it had so much over spray from the paint job. I sprayed it flat black to cover the red overspray.

I may have gotten lucky. THe only place I can see an evidence of leakage is around the upper tank cap. Replaced it with a generic from Advance today until I can get an oem cap. I don't care much for the generic cap

That would be awesome if it turns out to be that simple. Washed ours today and I popped the hood to take a look at the tank. That jogged my memory as to what actually happened when it leaked. First thing I did was replace the cap to no avail. It ended up being the brass neck had two hairline cracks that were really hard to see. New tank!

I ran it up to temp yesterday after cleaning the neck really good and replacing the cap. No evidence yet of a leak but will check the neck again tonight.

THANKS Jeff!
