Odometer readout
I am going to look at 1990 Vette tomorrow and theguy told me that the tach and the odometer doesn't work. I've looked in the service manual and can't find anything specific about the odometer except that it is part of the CCM. Anybody know how to look up the mileage on a car?

You might also visit your nearest Chevy service center with the VIN. I believe they might record the odometer reading associated to each repair/servicing.
So, depending on the number of visits to a dealer's service center there may have a some sort of mileage audit trail.

Thanks, Ken. I'll let you know. It depends on the condition of the rest of the car. Might have to have you redo the amps and the stereo head.

As many have already mentioned the mileage is stored in the BCM/CCM. The cluster will display whatever is in the computer so even if someone would change the cluster you still have the same mileage value.
As I understand it the mileage can be changed using the Tech 1 tool with a specific cartridge. If this has been done there is no record or audit trail in the car's computer that it was done.
On the good side it is not likely someone other than a dealership would have access to one.
That is why it is so important that you do your homework on the car, any decent Chevrolet service department will provide you with any history of the car and warranty work that has been done.
Check the carfax as well for discrepancies between date and mileage values. I can honestly say I spent a great deal of time checking out my ZR1 and its history before I bought it.
Cheers!

Not happening
I checked the car out and after I looked at it, I walked away from it. It was in bad shape. Found another one closer to me that is a steel blue 91 that has some miles but it runs good and looks good. Thanks for the help.

Actually, it is not for me but a friend in OKC that started drooling when he saw my ZR-1. I had bought my wife a black 91 coupe and she let him drive it. He is an attorney, pretty conservative but crazy about Vettes. His younger son is too, and about planes as well.. Perfect combination: Jets and Vettes. His son is also the wrench wrangler, so I will be showing them what they need to do with it to fix a few minor problems. Drives great and with the different exhaust system, sounds bad to the bone!
