Default Need some identification help.

I know a guy who works at a dealership. A guy came in and wants to trade in his car towards a new one. He says his trade in is a 1989 ZR1 convertible pilot prototype. I managed to get the vin number from him. Can anyone tell me anything about this car? It's black on black with a red interior with a wide body kit and rear spoiler.

hi there,

That's a standard corvette convertible.

Open the hood and it'll be a L98 engine and not a LT5 (32 valve motor)

Many say they are a "ZR-1" or a special ZR-1, but might only have a badge or a story with it.

I wonder if it was a road test car for a LT5, then had the L98 put back after the testing? I seem to remember reading in The Heart of The Beast of LT5's being tested that way.

Thanks for the information. I just wanted to know if the car was a real ZR1 convertible And if you could tell exactaly what it is by the vin number.

What I can tell you by this VIN number is this is not a ZR-1

There are only a handful of known ZR-1 hand built convertibles in the ZR-1 community

Of those a MY 89 is NOT one of them.

Yes you can tell by the VIN, and that VIN says L98 loud and clear (the 8th character being an "8" indicates "L98". The 8th character of a ZR-1 is a "J". And, there are some other clues from the VIN as well, e.g., "1G1yz" prefaces it as a ZR-1, and the last 7 digits begin with ...580xxxx (the last 4 digits being the build # for that year).

SO! As David said, someone is trying to pass it off as something other than what it is. (NOT a ZR-1 by any stretch).

The 8th character is the VIN validation character identifier. VIN "8" indicates L98, and VIN "J" indicates LT5.

AND, as David said, looking under the hood will tell all. And, if you want more, there were NO factory convertible ZR-1s built.

And, the VIN will begin w/ 1G1yz... for a ZR-1 "yy" is a standard mo.
