I have always been a great big fan of the ZR1 since the day they came out. I was wondering how hard it is to have you guys cars worked on by a competant mechanic at chevy or anyone else.

First of all, just about everything, except the motor, is same as a typical C-4. As far as the motor itself is concerned, its extremly durable. Typically, its sensors or minor ancilliary stuff(like EGR valve) that fails.
Also, a large Chevrolet dealership normally has at leat one mechanic who is trained to work on LT-5. Also, any reputable "Corvette shops" are familiar with LT-5.
Also, forums such as this one is extremly helpful in diagnosing a problem with help from someone who had a similar symtoms.
For these reasons, I would'nt let exotic nature of LT-5 scare you away from ZR-1s.
However, just to be on the safe side, check w/ your local Chevy dealership and Corvette shops first.

Even some of the motor related stuff isn't too bad. The under the plenum stuff (starter, secondary vacuum lines, etc) can be handled by a competent mechanic or DIY-type. Sure, getting the plenum off is a pita but it's not super complicated. There are just a number of things to remove and a bunch of bolts, some that are a bit difficult to get at. But if you keep track of everything as it comes off it's not too bad.

It's not until you get to the internals of the LT5 where a real good LT5 mechanic would be needed. But, as stated earlier, the LT5 is a very stout and strong motor and shouldn't really need internal work for a long time, if ever. A well maintained LT5 can run hundreds of thousands of miles without ever needing to be opened up.

I have had mine for 7 weeks now and so far the plugs have been changed, all the fluids, and I put in a new alternator, that took about 2.5 hours. Not too bad to work on though.

Aaron71771,
94-95s(93, I'm not sure) do have EGR on passengerside exhaust manifold. I know, occasionally carbon clogged EGR will set code 32.
If you want to verify, come down to Va and you can help me clean it out.

I stand corrected then, I thought all LT5's were EGR free. I'd bet the 93's have it too then.

Hey, Aaron 71771,
I wish you were right. Beacuse, my 94 has been setting code 32 occasionally. Sooner or later, I'm gonna have to remove the EGR and clean it out. It looks like 2-3 hr. job. :(

I am happy to report that my fiance (who is pretty mechanically inclined) has had no trouble working on the car thus far. Just has no experience with this particular motor. But he changed the coil packs, wires and plugs in under 2 hours start to finish with no problems in my driveway with no garage. Fellow ZR-1 owners were very helpful in giving good instructions and tips. :)

Don,

There are several people in the area that are very qualified to work on ZR-1's. Mark Haibeck is very close and there are certified mechanics at Bernard Chevrolet in Libertyville and Bill Kay in Downers Grove. Good luck finding the right ZR-1, now is definitely the time!

Mike

The reason that I ask is because my brother wants to buy a C5 but I'm trying to talk him into a '94 or '95 ZR1. That way we can have the best of both worlds to switch, his ZR1 and my Z06. What a dream team.  :boxing

read the "Heart of the Beast" and you will get an appreciation for the quality of the engineering and parts that go into an LT5.

the engine is an anvil. the hearder you drive it, the better it runs.

the engine is super durable, not as good a power to weight as a Z06, but a broader power band, higher top speed, and endurance durability.

both are super cars, I just prefer the ZR1 due to the exotic nature of the car!!!

I have a nice DRM 450 HP car for sale, come buy it!!! 22k!!!
