None of them illuminate. It's a simple thing to make them so however. Then set it to whatever RPM you desire. It's a tad inconvienent to be looking so far down and taking your eyes off the road however, so, probably from a safety standpoint, they eliminated them.
This is from page 11 in my drivers manual. Unlike most upshift lights, this amber light tells you when to shift for maximum acceleration. It appears at an indicated 5800 RPM in each of the first five gears whenever you accelerate at wide open throttle. Why 5800 RPM when the engine's power peak is 6000 RPM? Because when the engine accelerates this quickly, there is a small amount of "lag" designed into the tach for the sake of readability. Hence when you reach an indicated 5800 RPM, actual engine speed is about 6000 RPM. (The lag occurs only during maximum acceleration.)
Jim, I've read enough of your posts to realize that I wish I knew half of what you've forgotton. I also realize this is rather far from important, but I am curious because I've only been in several Z's, all were 90's, and all had a working shift light. Also we were all under the impression that nothing had been done to our cars since they left the factory. Any chance they were disabled after 90?
The damn :mad 1-4 shift lift comes on in my '90. The dinky little up arrow comes on too I think. Hmmm maybe I haven't seen it in the Z. I'll look tonight. I may be getting it confused with my old-wrecked '86
Well, I must admit, screwing with a stock car is not my forte. I can count them on one hand and a bit less than one finger, so if you saw it, who am I to dispute it? It's easy to make a shift lite with what we got. However, like the oil pressure and oil temperature I mount on the A-Pillar, you have to see it when you most need to see it. Personally, I want a shift lite hooked to a cattle prod to remind me.
GMs shift light strategy has me a little baffled as well. It seems as though all of the 90's and the early 91 calibration has the shift light functional.
From at least the 91 "BFXB" cal, the light is disabled (by setting the enable temp to 151C). Can't say about later years, but from the experience of others who posted, I suspect it is disabled on everything after 91.
Lurker's right, it's no problem to just lower that temp threshold to get it functional again. Then it can be set to come on at whatever RPM you wish.

I mounted a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the A-pillar to be able to see it, but also to get away from the electric sender controlled/non-liinear/unreliable factory gauge. My shift light will go in the back of the Toledo-Pro hi-rise hood because "you have to see it when you most need to see it" and I sure don't wanna be peering down at the dash.
Jim, I would have mounted a water temp gauge on the A-pillar as well, but at the time I was more concerned about the oil pressure. The coolant & oil temps can be selected for digital readout on my 94 and because it looked like a real bear to find a place & connection to hook up a mechanical temp gauge. Mind sharing with me your preference for oil temp over coolant temp for the other A-pillar gauge? Also, do you use the mechanical temp gauges?
