Well I apparently have a AC Compressor that went south. The pulley rattles and it howls really loud. Does anyone know of a good place to get a replacement, and how hard would it be for me to swap the Compressor out myself. Pulling the plenum is a breeze, but beyond that and draining the system I'm not sure of. Anyone done this.
Is there any possibility that the pulley (clutch) part is bad and I don't need to change out the whole thing. Clutch won't engage when I turn on the AC.
I had mine repaired at GAC Auto Compressor Supply 2231 Brookfield Avenue Dallas, Texas 75235. (281)498-0085. Unless the prices have changed, it was $150.00 that included fixing the clutch. They will also convert the compressor to work with 134a. Compressor looks like new.
I had to check real quick to make sure I remembered where I saw the post on how to remove the AC compressor. It is on the zr1net site under how-to's and was done by Scott Fabre. You will see that once you get the plenum off it is not to hard to get the compressor off. The easiest and most proper way to bleed the system would be to take the car to someone that does ac and have them capture the freon. You certainly don't want to pollute the atmosphere. I wish I could answer the question about the clutch, but I have not had any direct experience with that.
Ron,
Thanks for the info. I will check into it. I went to an AC shop today that showed me how the clutch part works. It could just be the clutch. I'm going to try and pull the clutch first and see if the hub underneath is OK. Other wise I will pull the compressor and swap out.
