Need new tires for 93 ZR1; I'm considering BF Goodrich g-force KD's or Michelin Pilot Sports. I currently have GSC's and do mostly recreational driving on sunny days. Want to hook up and handle better. Any recommendations?

Welcome to the ZR-1 Forum,Oren.
The BFG G-Forces will deliver more dry grip but the Michelin Pilot Sports will last longer & work in all weather. For the money, the BFG Comp T/A's are an excellent buy.
FWIW,I'm running Michelins because only they and Pirelli make 18" tires in ZR-1 widths.

I was wondering the same thing about getting new tires.

My problem is that my fronts need to be replaced soon, however my rears are in great condition (defect in one tire - they replaced both). I guess I could alway burn some serious rubber in the back to even things out

I have the Bridgestone RE71's which are ok, but I want to upgrade to the highest street performance available. I have only heard great things about the Michelin Sports and BF Goodrich G-force KD's. I am looking for the best performance so I think the KD's will work better. I will sacrifice a little durablity and all weather performance for dry performance.

Am I on the right path here or should I consider other options.

Does anyone know how the KD's compare to the Z06 Supercar Tire??

Just my opinion,David, but the BFG G-Force kd's would work well for your application.
Another option would be to widen your stock 95 rear wheels so you could run 335's.

Clint,

Which rims would I use (17x12 or 18x12), and where would I get them from? Would you keep the same front rim and sizes if going with the 335 rears?

Lastly, are KD's still the best choice with 335's??

thanks!

I have also heard good things about the Pilot sports, however they were about $450 more per set than the Dunlop SP8000's I got this spring. I have been 100% satisfied with the Dunlops...tons of grip, low noise, and even wear so far. I couldn't justify the extra $$$ for something I will probably wear out in 2 years anyway.

I forgot to mention the Dunlops are good in the rain unlike the Michelins that were on my car previously. I almost got killed from hydroplaning on the freeway once so good rain grip is important to me. I know, what was I doing driving in the rain? It was nice and sunny when I left the house. Oh well, such is the weather in Michigan!

David, you're outta luck with the BFG kd's if you want to run 18"s. A 295/35/18 is as wide as they offer. 17"s are a different story, however.
No,I would not run the same width rims on front & rear. For example,I'm running 18x10's on the front and 18x12.5's on the rear of my ZR-1. If I ever went back to 17"s, I would run 17x10's & 17x13's.

Kumho Victoracers are nice and sticky, and reasonably priced too. they wont last as long as the others or be as good in the rain. check them out.

Clint,

Let me clarify, I was wondering if I would use the same front size as I am presently running if I choose to go to the 335.

Also, is it necessary to buy a new set of rims if I am to go to the 335's? I spoke to Luke at the tire rack and he mentioned that the KD's are not available in the 335 also. He did state that the 335 Michelin Pilot Sports would fit on my stock 17 x 11 rims - or is this not advisable?

I really don't want to have to buy all new rims ($$$$$) because that would make me want to upgrade the brakes, which would.........oh s#%$, what to do!

Is anyone running 335 on stock rears - is this possible or is a 12 rim required? Also, what about clearance with that extra width.

Thanks,

David

A ZR-1 can easily handle a 335 rear tire,David. However, almost all tire makers & retailers do not recommend a 335 on a 11" wide rim. FWIW,I know a lot of ZRoners doing it,though. You could always have your stock 17x11 rims widened to 17x12.
I'm getting ready to install a pair of 345/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sports on the rear of my ZR-1. Looks like a snug fit, though.

Clint,
I knew you would have the answer! 345's WOW that is HUGE. What are you running on the front?

As you know, I have polished wheels all around (stock size), would I still be able to have them widened? If so, who can do this? Anyone local you think?

I'm running 285/35/18 Michelins on the front.
Since your wheels are polished, they can be widened w/o screwing them up. Chrome is a different story. Wheels America in Dallas,Tx can widen your stock rims for $175/ea. Their phone number is (214)330-9866. Their email address is fixrimda@aol.com I've seen their widened ZR-1 five spokes before and they do nice work.
BTW,you don't have to install wider front tires,if you don't want to,David.

1208. is the deal that was had at Mavis tire.IMO expensive but worth it. Watch who you get to install the tire's. The sensor's in the tire's are 140. each. They are easily hacked. The Vette Dr's installed mine.
