or do you take your car in to a "professional" to have it tuned/modded?

I used to take it to an unprofessional shop - that didn't work so well.

I was able to find a great local tuner willing to work on my car last year. It's been smooth sailing ever since.

Do you mod yourself?

99% of the modding, yes.

Tranny tuning, yes.

Engine tuning, no. For that I seek the help of a professional "dyno tuner."

If I can't do it, it is not going on the car. So far so good on what I have done. Gonna tackle FI next and then forged motor. The only thing I won't do (yet) is the tuning since I don't know about it. As far as the installs, I'll try it all.

I admire the hell out of you guys that do the bigger mods yourselves. I can handle something small like a Vararam or an exhaust. But when it comes to something like headers or a supercharger, ECS will get my business every time. To me, it's worth a few thousand dollars to know for sure it's done right.

I did that at first. Ended up spending a fortune for crappy work. Now I do all the work myself except for a few things like balancing the rotating assembly. Just do not have the tools certain jobs.

I get a lot of satification in doing the job myself and knowing that it was done right the first time.

You'd be surprised at how easy most of it is after doing it once. When I pulled the diff out of my car I was looking it over and almost said heeeeelllll no but after doing it I found that it is pretty simple. I agree with kromberg, I do it for the pure satisfaction I get from doing it myself. Doing it yourself does take more time but if you think about it, it will be done right because you are not in a hurry to get it done so you can get to work on the next car and get it done, etc., etc. I only start on a project after finding and absorbing and printing all the info I can find on it.

Since it is so hot I have not been tracking my car so I started on a stereo project. I didn't even know what fiberglass resin looked like until I popped open the can and poured it out. I'm extremely pleased with the progress so far. I am hoping to be done with that in the next few weeks, as I do have a regular job that pretty much limits my time to projects to the weekends. Check out some of my how-tos here .

This forum is a wealth of info and you can find how tos everywhere!

You mean like: head bolts that weren’t torqued properly, Trans axial bolts that were finger tight, blower belt bolts finger tight, exhaust hangers dangling, exhaust resting on transmission, exhaust leaks.

Some of which can be catastrophic.

Except for the work done by Linginfelter or done while I was watching, I have had to go over and repair. The loose head bolts was a biggy.

If these guys aren’t padding the bill with extra hours, then they are rushing through your work.

I do my own mods....

- replaced clutch/flywheel/clutch hydraulics
- replaced M6 transmission with rebuilt unit
- changed cam & valvesprings
- installed A&A P1SC supercharger

I am to poor to pay someone else to do the wrench turning...

the whole reason for getting into C5's was that I could work on it myself.

the C5 layout is clean and well thoughtout, is easy to work on except for the clutch.

parts wile they are expensive in some cases, they are readly available as well as durable.

My "big" jobs go to Chris, Doug, and the rest of the ECS team also.

They installed my second torque converter and the 3.73 gears. I installed the first converter and swore I'd never do it again without a lift.

Yes...but I leave the tuning to somebody with a dyno.

I have done the following to both of my C5s current and previous and installed on another *C5.

no specific order

shifter,
stereo,
tie rod ends
sway bars
transleaf springs (T1 suspension)
poly bushing kits
Headers (TPIS and Stainless Works)
Clutch
Brakes
A Piller Pods
Fuel system parts (including about 4 different sets of Fuel Injectors.
Heads and (2) Cams.
Double Roller Timing Chain.
TTi kit
PTK kit
ATI kit and A&A kit (also installed on another vehicle)
Replaced 2 motors (in the garage with no lift) that includes disassembly and reassembly both times.
Valve springs, seals
shocks

and some stuff I am just forgetting.

oh yeah the Door Molding on my Coupe (drivers side) and mirror.

Ported Throttle Body.
Various Cold Air Intake systems when I had a NA car.

hmmmm

wheel bearings and stainless steel brake lines..uhhh......boost controller..hell how much more do you want.

I just hesitate about installing a new gear set and adjust the gears. It may be for the specialist.
For the rest it's all DIY, road tuning included (WB absolutely necessary!)

I'll do almost anything shy of building a shortblock... I like to do tuning as well.

Same here. I do everything myself - headers, monster cam, springs et al.

But I am shortly going to ECS for some "small mods" however as they can do some magic that I can't do in my garage with jackstands
