I'd kinda like to drive 200 MPH before I die. It is on my stupid things to do in life list. I figure I'll need about 525 horsepower at the engine to do it.
I'm wondering if I can run nitrous for several minutes to boost me up from 180 to 201 MPH and turn through the traps at El Mirage dry lake bed. What would it take to make it happen. How much money.
2002 Z06, bone stock engine. Lots of suspension mods.
I heard somewhere that the C5 was one of the few car that didn't need body mods to go 200,it was a LPE test car( TT one and coupe because of the back glass)I think! Every car they tested needed some kind of body mod done to it to do the task!!! Thumbs up to the Corvette engineers for this!
There has been several write ups about this in the past. I think the general consensus was about 525 to 540 hp and that would have to be up at 6500 RPM. Supposedly the C5 can pull the 200 mark in 5th gear tapped out! The only mod people spoke of was taking the plastic out of the fender scoops to realease pressure undr the hood. Good lcuk and I have had the same silly dream since I can remember. I've come close, 186mph but not quite there yet. Once I supercharge I will be sure to give it a run!! Dan
Done it and more than once. You better have a well setup car (down force, suspension, brakes and motor) and in perfect conditions.
I would highly recommend a driving school and also learning what to do at high speed when all is not perfect. Doing a four wheel drift, skid, correction, etc. at 150 is much different than doing it at 60 mph. You should train your reactions to an unconscious consciousness level.
200 MPH, I would think more like 700+ RWHP because it will still take you a while to get up there.
First really good tires, second good alignment, third killer fuel system, fourth engine, sixth brakes.
It’s doable but certainly cheaper on 2 wheels .

No! First should be safety . I am assuming other LSR places are the same, but I know Bonneville for sure has a long list of safety regulations that you have to pass first thru Tech inspection. You will need a roll cage, extra long wheel studs, etc., etc.. Whether you got the HP or not, they will not just let you drive a street car 200 MPH without lots of race care safety equiptment. Just something to think about if your car is a street car because you may not want to do some of the things that are required. So check into where you plan on running, and what (if any) safety regulations they have first. I say this because I was wanting to run mine at Bonneville, until I read all the safety requirements.
from what i can remember, on a z06 tranny and 3.42 gears, 7000rpm in 5th gear was around 190mph so from what i gather, no matter how much power you have, you shouldnt be able to hit 200 right?
u either need to gear down and have a lot of power to pull high in 5th or gear up and have enough power to pull 6th
Hi guys,
I reached 186 mph with a 99 C5 A4 with 3.15 diff.
It was with a P1SC kit at 7-8 PSI and a B&B BUllet exhaust. It was pretty easy. I'm sure tht if I lower the car a bit more, close the mirrors and open the front fenders I could reach 200 mph. At least I hope so!!
Yeah I saw that too! Sixth gear is a weak gear from what I read and is not supposed to support such a heavy run.
But I would like to have a better explanation

They not only said it was weak, but it was so small that it would spin so fast, there was no where for the heat to disipate and it would actually melt down. They had shown a picture of the size of the gear and it seemed really small. They do make and after market but they did conclude that you needed to pull the 200 in fifth otherwise take the chance of burning the gear out at 200mph and possibly blowing the tranny at that speed. Any we all know that sometimes the trannies can go quitely, and some times they can lock up. If B ever happened at the ol 200 mark, you'd have a big problem!
As for the rpm's to pull the 200 mark in fifth, I personally thought the car didn't have enough gear in fifth to do it, but there were people that chimed in saying it was possible with stock gear on the 6 speed. But who knows, guess I won't till I try.
From everything I've read on the subject, you'll need more than horsepower to do it. Gears are going to play a major factor. My car now redlines at 7000 RPM which would make my top speed in 5th gear around 190 MPH with the stock 3.42 gears. Since 6th gear is not usable in a top speed run, I'm thinking a set of 2.73 gears would put me well above the 200 MPH mark.
I'd like to know if there's anything to that "sixth gear problem" or if it's just conjecture. In the picture, it doesn't look all that much smaller than fifth gear. It's bathed in fluid anyway, right?
Maybe Lingenfelter knows.
