Hi all .....recently had a 160degree thermostat installed and I'm running 198-200 degrees on the highway and sometimes up to 230degrees in stop and go traffic ....got a vortech unit ....had the radiator completely cleaned about 3 months ago ....am I running TOO HOT ????
That is pretty warm. I am down in Dallas, and my 98 used to get hot in rush hour traffic before I started all my mods. Suggest you check to see if the trigger temps for your fans are still set at stock. I have both of mine turned down all the way. It is much easier to keep the engine cooler to begin with than it is to cool it down once it gets hot.
A 160* thermostat is not going to fix overheating by itself. GM designed the C5 to operate at temps as high as 250* and the red zone on the temp gauge reflects that. So they put synthetic oil in the engine to handle the heat. However, detonation becomes a factor at those temps. The only way to fix it is to get a thicker radiator, like Dewitts or Ron Davis. The small radiator from GM wont hold much coolant so when the engine draws more into it from the radiator, it hasnt cooled enough to bring engine temps down. A thicker rad will solve that.
