Default turbo failure solved!

how about that! i received new twins and i figured out what the problem was with the old turbo that was failing.

i tested the gate on the side that was having issues and i can hear air passing threw the exhaust! that cannot be right, how could ever compress the spring? i tested the other side and no air passing!

oh man!

Good find Nick!!

Can someone give some explanation as to how that could lead to the excessive heat that let to that turbo failing?

You're SD so it wouldn't change fueling. How much air was getting by, a lot or a little?

it killed the turbo as it was getting over spun....big time. the one turbo gate was open while the other was closed...

Nick, I'm not a turbo expert by any stretch, but I think overspun may be the wrong term for the failure.

Just trying ot think through what happend. I would guess that the turbo with the broken wastegate is the one that failed. Since it was not getting powered properly on the hot side, the compressor may have been seeing some type of brutal surge. It would start to spool up a bit and then the other turbo would hit that compressor with pressure waves trying to go the other direction.

Just a guess. I would like to hear what the experts have to say.

yes problematic side.

well if the gate wasnt working right the turbo would get one mean azz work out.

the diaphram looks good....the air must be leaking past the valve guide and then out the down pipe ?!?!

you know what these tial are cheap enough to just toss a new one on and forget about it.

If the wastegate is stuck open your not going to be building boost with that turbo. It's not going to get overspun, it would not be spinning as fast because most of your exhaust energy is bypassing the turbo. Then, like Quick said... the turbo on the other side is going to be feeding boost to the comp discharge inducing surge.
