Default A4 guys....

Well I hear that when you're in OD and going WOT is hard on the tranny...so are we suppose to bring it out of OD before we go WOT?

Sorry for this being a supid question...I've never had an auto before. I'm just trying to keep it on the road a lil longer before having the trans shipped to RPM.

The guys at RPM advised me to "down-shift" from overdrive to 3rd before going WOT!

Apparently going wot in overdrive "shocks" the transmission big time!

i think it would be wise to pull the shifter down into 3rd.
one other thing is NOT TO SHIFT WOT ON THE 3>4 SHIFT!

I am pretty sure it is NOT an issue of driving the car in the OD, but more of a downshift from OD to 3rd( either manual or via the tranny ). If the car has the RPMs and MPH to staying in OD, it is OK to go into WOT.

leave it 3rd is the best or easiest on the trans for sure. I have a RPM a4trans and have sprayed my 225 shot going into 4th about 30 times. No problems yet.....

Now its even worse when you go WOT in 3rd the downshift into 2nd is really violent. You really need to reprogram the car so that the trans shifts both up and down the way you want it to. Then just leave it in OD and pick the speed based on what you programmed so that the car downshifts when and where you want it to. I never take my car out of OD and I never go WOT below 65 mph except at the track.

So its ok to go WOT if already doing over 65 or higher and leaving it in OD?

leave the car in D if you are really hammering it.

if you are in OD, slow down a bit, pull it into D

it will help the car control better with big HP and is easier on the trans

rodney build a strong a4, that's for sure, but he still recommends doing this.

I see you are now over 600 HP to the rear tires . From first hand experience with my 700 RWHP and the 4L60E tranny you need to watch transmission fluid temps like a hawk. I am NOW recommending not letting the tranny fluid get over 210 deg. with high HP even though GM sets there warning off at 270 deg. You will need a LARGE tranny cooler to keep tranny tempes below 210 deg. Running at WOT the TC is not in lock-up and a lot of heat is being produced by fluid friction. When the A4 tranny shifts at WOT/high speed a lot of things happen including big friction on clutch packs etc. The cooler the tranny fluid the better it can absorb the heat and better keep the clutch packs etc.from failure. I am a living example, I am now in the process of getting my 4L60E tranny and TC rebuilt.

If you are in OD and crusing at 65mph and go WOT your A4/TC will un-lock and shift down to third or second depending on many things. With 600+ RWH this will shock the 4L60E tranny and could shorten tranny life. I have done this many times without problems but you are living on borrowed time with over 600hp on a stock tranny.

According to RPM, wot down shifting from 3rd to 2ed is ok, when you go wot in overdrive (4th) the trans down shifts 2 gears which shocks the hell out of the trans, hence the down shift into 3rd before going wot!

Again, that`s what RPM told me!

Yep--Rodney explained to me that cruising in OD on the highway and someone wanting to play at 70-80 mph..........you punch it and the bands going from 4 to 2 kill the A4s.

I go WOT in 3 (will have to try in 2 ), and move the shifter up to OD around 126mph and the tranny shifts at 131----you can't even fill it!!! With NO boost loss either

If you are in OD and go WOT at 70-80 mph its not going to shift into second at those speeds.

If you cannot reprogram your car's trans then do the following:

Put your car in OD and find the lowest speed that you can go WOT and not downshift into 2nd.
Put your car in 3rd and find the lowest speed that you can go WOT and not downshift into 1st.
Remember those two speeds and use them to help choose when you want to go WOT when racing
someone from a roll in different situations. If you want to be safe just stay out of WOT below 70 mph

If you try WOT in 2 with 600 HP hang on you are going sideways with street tires. I found that out right away. At my present HP I can't go WOT under 80 mph with my street tires (295/35/18 F1s) and keep it safe. When I shift down to third before going WOT it hooks up better than from OD and seems easier on tranny. My next tires will be 305 35 18 Nitto R2s as soon as I burn the 295 up.

I know what mph my tranny is programmed to shift at . I'm just telling you what I was told by RPM who built my tranny. If I'm cruising at 70-80 and I stomp it, the tq converter springs up and the car gears down

I know the car will go sideways I've had my current setup running since early 2003.

I totally agree with RPM. We should avoid the WOT 4 to 2 shift. I make sure I am going 80+mph before instant WOT in OD. At 80+mph to WOT my tranny will only drop to third gear and then back to OD at 145mph. If I need to launch under 80mph I will hand shift to the appropriate gear and then ease into WOT to keep car straight. The A4 at 700 HP is a to handle on stock street tires
