I think they may need that because GM now got 5 or 7 years power train warranty (I forgot)?
GM's powertrain warranty is a Joke IMO. Just go read the C6 Z06 guys that has broke a valve spring on a bone stock motor and had there warranty terminated for anything the dealer can find that shows any kind of abuse. (Like rubber in the wheelwell).
yeah the new 335 bmw monitors boost targets, if they are not within predetermined ranges then the gates open and the car goes into reduced engine power.
w/that being said i am sure that GM thought of something....
wow bmw guys blowing motors up????
I owned a E46 M3 before I had my Vette.
Not many people know, but the S54 motor has a computer that keeps track of the rpm of the car over the last 40 seconds of the motor running, if you have SMG tranny how often the launch control's been used, and the seconds or minutes the motor's been over 6500rpm.
Several people had their warranty voided with blown motors when the BMW techs had this print-out showing exessive high rpm's.
I don't see why GM can't come up with something similar. Technology's there, and a LS9 setup would make it an ideal canidate.

Don't forget the LS9 has throttle by wire and bypass valve is also likely PCM controlled... so GM can govern max boost with ease, one would think. Then you have OnStar watching so who knows the data mining that can be present.
Now disabling OnStar is fairly easy .
It will be interesting how HP tuners does with this PCM and how much reverse engineering they will be willing to invest.

I think it's already there, (in some sorts) if you've ever used any Mercruiser scan software for the BBC in a boat, it has a time grid for RPM, which shows how many minutes/hours an engine has been within a certain RPM spread. Its pretty easy to tell when someone's been flogging a motor for an extended period of time

Never heard of that, but then again I don't drive a beamer.
My hope would be they simply follow Ford's formula and just build the motor to the hilt. Give the customer what they want! It really wouldn't cost much. If I can buy a nice set of pistons for $500-$600 for my 1 car, GM can get them a hell of a lot cheaper ordering or making enough for a production run in the thousands.
