Default 4l80e Pros & Cons ?

I see some members on the forum talking about this 4L80e. I believe it is a turbo 400 conversion to work in the C5. I saw Tom Urich had Yank build up one for him, and another fellow Stealth99 using a custom RPM application.

Can someone list the pro's and con's of switching to a 4L80e, and benifits of the RPM over Yank conversion.

Pro's: A bad AZZ darn near indestructable tranny. That drives like stock

Cons: A b!tch to install, and SUPER expensive. After talking to RPM, they said they can darn near do 5 A4 swaps to 1 4L80E install

With RPM, you'll actually get your product. With YANK, you get it when you get it..

I guess that's what they mean by being "yanked around."

$3000 complete with installation on my Chevy truck. I'm guessing a little more for a vette.

If that was the price I would be knocking on RPMs door for one

I think at least 3x that price if not more if you add in what you need to do to make it fit and get it to work.

Pro's: Ability to withstand more power and for a longer period of time before needing a rebuild. It's not that a 4L60 can't take good power, the question is for how long.

Con's: Cost and complexity are the largest obstacles. As I understand it the conversion is north of $10,000. That by itself excludes nearly everyone except the serious drag racing enthusiasts.

Plus you have to factor in the potential support issues of running a one-off system. Who is going to support it? Who will work on it if there are problems? Will you be able to get parts even if you spin your own wrenches?

I suppose the argument here would be that the transmission support issue is moot because the car already is somewhat one-off if needs a 4L80.

RPM vs. Yank:

There really isn't enough feedback on either conversion package to be able to explain why one is better than the other. The only people who really know have something to sell, so you have to keep that in perspective.

That being said, I have an RPM 4L60 and a Yank convertor. I am very happy with both. If I were to eventually upgrade to a 4L80 it would be an RPM piece given their customer support and the fact that my tuner has a relationship with RPM.

Far as I know Mike (Stealth) has the only working 4l80e in a C5 here in the forum. RPM has been waiting for feed back from Mike before they mass produce the components needed for the conversion. Mike's car also has a trans brake, which would be nice since the 4l60e trans brakes don't work.

I actually had Neverlift on my "To call" list today. Rumor has it, that they charge right around 10grand for "Labor Only". I'll know tomorrow.

Not sure where you heard that at.
There are more than a half dozen working right now.
Might want to ask Nick Yoskin about his 1.355 60' and ask him if his is working...

In 4DRUSH's defense, the transbrakes work great, but not that great for bracket racing. They are a little slow to release.

Being that its a fairly custom piece, they would prefer the price NOT be quoted on the forums. There is ALOT of parts that goes into it. If you call them, they will go over it with you line by line and break it down.

I am not looking for a firm price on the forum. Just a range of pricing between the two systems. I am sure many people would like to have some sort of idea on what to budget on such an expensive upgrade.
