You should drop a call into SMC (Grand National Guys) I believe they may use plastic parts with plastic washers (no rubber)

Get it fixed up so we can hit the rollers, if you get the pump and its to cold out to install it just get it down to the shop and you can do it here or we can do it for you.

What are you suggesting? The freezing temp of methanol is ~-130 degrees F. If the seals did shrink when dry, wouldn't it leak when you first filled it up new? I'm confused.

They use a flo-jet pump. It will leak out of the top over 125 PSI. Same issues.

The diaphram is not rubber. Its a material called santoprene. Excellent with chemicals. Rest is plastic.

If the alcohol doesnt have any contaminants you are correct. If it runs the chance of being contaminated, then by draining you dont soak it and run the risk of having a diaphram issue. I have had my reservoir filled while doing engine renovations for months at a time without issue. But this is one of those it cannot hurt if you wish to drain it. Just like storing a car for winter, draining the fuel system will prevent the fuel from going bad from moisture. This case both of you are correct, just on opposite sides of the fence.

Ok, I'm in no way trying to be difficult, just to understand. Even if the methanol was contaminated with water ( lets go extreme at 50% water), the freezing point would still be -65 degrees F. So no risk of expansion due to freezing damaging the diaphram. I was trying to understand the suggestion that the seals or diaphram are reacting with the methanol causing them to swell.

Lucky, I don't think anyone's suggesting that the methanol froze. Certain seals will swell when exposed to certain solvents. Then if allowed to dry, they can contract to a smaller than original size. That's what I was suggesting.

Julio has said that this won't happen with the seals in his current pumps unless they are exposed to something other than methanol and water.......gasoline for instance.

Understood. That would certainly be a poor design if the seals were prone to changing state by the very fluid they were intended to be exposed to.

Thanks.
